Édition originale très rare imprimée à Strasbourg du deuxième livre publié sous le pseudonyme collectif d'Émile Erckmann (1822-1899) et d'Alexandre Chatrian (1826-1890) utilisé depuis 1847. « En 1849, Alexandre Chatrian fait paraître dans le journal Le Démocrate du Rhin un conte, Malédiction, tiré de son roman Karl-Maria, tandis qu’y paraît également le conte Vin rouge, vin blanc qu’Émile Erckmann avait écrit sous le titre Les Deux Crânes. Les deux récits sont signés Émile Erckmann-Chatrian, c’est-à-dire la réunion de leurs deux patronymes. Les écrits communs paraissent sous cette double signature. Ainsi le recueil Histoires et contes fantastiques (Strasbourg, 1849) puis le récit Science et Génie et le drame L’Alsace en 1814 paraissent chez Silbermann à Strasbourg en 1850. On voit donc combien les deux auteurs remanient leurs œuvres de jeunesse pour essayer de percer dans le milieu littéraire, ils changent le titre et réécrivent l’œuvre avant de la publier sous la signature Émile Erckmann-Chatrian. La genèse des premières oeuvres est instructive et montre combien les deux hommes font feu de tout bois pour publier » (Noëlle Benhamou, Erckmann-Chatrian : « deux plumes jumelles » ?
