Même s’ils n’ont pas lu le chef-d’œuvre d’Agatha Christie, "Le meurtre de Roger Ackroyd", de nombreux lecteurs, surtout parmi les amateurs de romans policiers, connaissent le procédé qui l’a rendu célèbre et croient pouvoir affirmer : l’assassin est le narrateur. Mais est-ce si sûr ? Comment se fier à un texte où les contradictions abondent et qui s’organise autour d’un récit unique, celui du prétendu criminel ? Et qui peut dire qu’Hercule Poirot, dans son euphorie interprétative, ne s’est pas lourdement trompé, laissant le coupable impuni ?
