Henri Barth / hommage XXX de l'Auteur / at. Malte:Brun"". Small stamp to front board and verso of front board. Printed on good paper. Internally very fine and clean. 32 pp. (missing the map).
Rare first edition with a most interesting presentation inscription from the author to the German explorer of Africa Henrich Barth. Barth is thought to be one of the greatest of the European explorers of Africa, as his scholarly preparation, ability to speak and write Arabic, learning African languages, and character meant that he carefully documented the details of the cultures he visited. He was among the first to comprehend the uses of oral history of peoples, and collected many. Afterwards, he wrote and published a five-volume account of his travels in both English and German. Malte-Brun published an extensive analysis of his African expedition.Malte-Brun, founding member of Société de Géographie and later secretary-general, was a French geographer whose father was also a geographer. He had a keen interest in the arctic and followed the Franklin Search period with great interest. This present publication details McClintock's Voyage of the Fox and summarizes the Franklin Search Period.Sabin 44171NMM 935.
