Le titre de cet ouvrage en indique le contenu. Orient et occident, l’église romane, le décor roman, le premier art gothique, la peinture gothique aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles, le baroque gothique et fin du Moyen Âge etc. L’Europe occidentale a créé au cours du Moyen Âge sa culture propre, en se dégageant peu à eu des influences méditérranéennes, orientales et barbares. Souvent plébiscité en tant que médiéviste, Henri Focillon (1883-1942) fut un théoricien de grande envergure et un commentateur sagace de l'art de son temps. Ses principaux ouvrages, en tant que médiéviste sont “L’art des sculpteurs romans: recherche sur l'histoire des formes”, et “Art d'Occident: le moyen-âge roman et gothique “. Il a consacré sa thèse de doctorat à Piranèse. Henri Focillon a eu une influence profonde sur les historiens de l'art qu'il a formés, tels que Jean Adhémar, Germain Bazin, André Chastel, sian, Louis Grodecki, Charles Sterling. Bon état d’occasion
