A useful introduction to the customs and festivals of the Chinese lunar year based on personal observation, Western translations, and other secondary works. The authors outline the history of the lunar calendar, discuss popular deities, note Imperial ceremonies related to the lunar calendar, and describe the popular customs and festivals month by month. Preparations, attitudes, ceremonies, and paraphernalia which are part of the proceedings are detailed.

Bound in full blue coloured roan, gilt title in English and Chinese on front cover, within a double gilt fillet. binding with wear at extremeties, upper joint with a split of ca. 3 cm at the lower end.Interiro fine. On the first paste down a small ticket from ''Ching-Foong '' Printing and Bookbinding Office, Szechuen Road Shangai. Rare copy of the original first Anglo-Chinese centennial calender. According to Cordier (Vol. I , col. 568) only 500 copies of this book were printed and most were destroyed during a fire in 1873 at the printing house '' Chin-Foong ''..
