Rutland, VT. G. A. Tuttle & Co C1855
Reference : 5065
First edition. An attractive children's ABC. Yellow wrapper (thin cloth), printed in orange and blue ink. roughly stitched to the spine (as seems common with American children's chapbooks of this period). The wrappers are a little faded with slight edgewear but still sound. 16 pages, beginning with a title page with an engraved vignette of a family sitting and reading together. An alphabet and then 14 pages with five words to each page, with an illustration of each word. Multi-syllabic words divided. The pages are a little darkened, and have very small closed tears to some pages. Overall though a very nice example of this scarce book. We can find no copies for sale, and only two library holdings (The Vermont Historical Society and the American Antiquarian Society). Although undated, George A. Tuttle & Co. published in Rutland between at least 1855 and at least 1861. By 1863, the firm name changed to Tuttle & Gay. "Juvenile series." The series title, is at the head of the wrapper. To the rear wrapper, are advertisements for the publisher's works. 15cm x 10.5cm. Conforms to WorldCat / OCLC: 78478301.
