‎Collijn 292. Amund Grefwe (ca. 1610-1677), was the first printer in Göteborg. He studied Latin at the University of Uppsala and was the author of a few minor works. He began his printing career in Uppsala working for Professor Wallius's private press and later for Laurentius Paulinus Gothus. Grefwe moved to Stockholm, where he worked for the royal translator Ericus Schroderus and when he moved back to his place of birth in Nyköping Grefwe goes with him. In 1646 he was offered a job in Göteborg. When he had finished the work on ""Carionis Chronika"" he moved to Göteborg in 1650. He was not satisfied with the promised conditions and complained to the Governor of Västergötland. In 1653 he was given priviliges by Queen Kristina, which allowed him to publish and sell his own works and also scholarly books. In 1650 he published the first book printed in Göteborg: "" Christelige Gåfwors Apoteek.""‎

‎Victorian Scraps Album. ‎

300 x 250 mm.‎

‎Fabulous decorative gilt and black ruled red cloth album. Comprising 40 leaves with around 600 intricate cut-outs of commemorative cards and images. Many of these are from early Christmas cards and winter themes - mostly English text. Includes some fabulous flowers, birds, butterflies, traditional dress / costumes and caricatures - mostly French text. All beautifully cut out, then thoughtfully and carefully assembled. One or two are dated. Including an advertising postcard (possibly once perfumed) for Rimmel, dated 1865. Therefore, we assume it was created during the period 1860 - 1875. Boards are bumped on corners but otherwise the gilt clean and bright. Endpapers are toned / lightly foxed. Each leaf has a blank verso, but the cuts have transferred their shapes onto the verso preceding. 300 x 250 mm (11Ÿ x 9Ÿ inches).‎

‎An Abridgement of the Prerogatives of St. Ann, Mother of the Mother of God. With the Approbation of the Doctors at Paris: And Thence Done into English to accompany the Contemplations on the Life and Glory of Holy Mary; and the Defence of the Same; with some Pieces of a like nature. To which a PREFACE is added concerning the Original of the STORY.‎

‎London: Ric. Chiswell at the Rose and Crown 1688 ‎

‎First edition. Pamphet. Disbound. Title, preface, a dedication to the Queen Regent (written by "the Maids of St Joseph") the text of the prerogatives. This is in fact an anti-catholic pamphlet from William Clagett. William Clagett (16461688) was an English clergyman and pamphleteer, particularly active during the reign of James II. As well as his own pamphlets, he would translate particularly colourful Continental Catholic material, with the aim of making the Catholics an object of ridicule. This is one of those pieces. A nice copy of this pamphlet. Apart from a a few slight marks, the pamphlet is clean and crisp throughout and well bound together.[ii] i-xv, [i], [vi], 1-20. pp. WING A108.‎

‎Brethren in Iniquity: Or, the Confederacy of Papists with Sectaries, for the Destroying of the True Religion, as by Law Establish'd, plainly detected.‎

‎London: Randal Taylor, 1690 ‎

‎Although the Popish Plot was ten years gone by the time this polemic was published, anti-Catholic feeling still ran high. This pamphlet purports to show all of the ways that Papists had attempted to undermine the Church of England since the Reformation. As such, this is almost a literature review of the previous hundred years, summarising Bishop Burnett, Stillingfleet and others, whilst quoting from Parliament and Catholic peers. It is followed by A LETTER OF THE MINISTERS Of the CITY of LONDON, Presented the First of January, 1645. to the Reverend Assembly of Divines sitting at Westminster, by Authority of Parliament, against TOLERATION. This pamphlet has been abstracted from a collection, and so appears as a disbound item - with the binding marks and stab marks to the spine. No wrapper or cover (now held in a protective sleeve. The top edge of the first couple of pages is beginning to come away - although the binding is still holding securely. A touch of darkening to the front and rear pages, less so inside. There are pencil ticks throughout the work in the margins. Wing B 4382. [4], 67, [1] pp.‎

(1807)

‎A finely drawn and hand-coloured original caricature - 'The Electors after the Close of the Poll, May 13th 1807' ‎

‎ 1807 Wilberforce, William (17591833), politician, philanthropist, and slavery abolitionist. Following the abolition of the slave trade, the Tories called an election. for the first and only time in his career he faced a poll for Yorkshire. Confronting as he did the great wealth and influence of both the Fitzwilliam and the Harewood interests, it was a testimony to the personal esteem in which he was held, and to his effectiveness in representing the county over the previous quarter-century, that he was returned at the head of the poll. It was alleged, however, that Wilberforce had compromised his independence by a coalition with Henry Lascelles, the Tory candidate. Wilberforce denied the charge and defended himself in a published letter to the electors. He acknowledged that some of his supporters had indeed also solicited votes for Lascelles, but this was without his sanction, and it would have been improper for him to constrain their actions. Lascelles, Henry, second earl of Harewood (17671841), Politician. His family wealth came from the slave trade in Barbados. After being elected twice as MP for Yorkshire, he stood again in 1807 - Lascelles, who was opposed by clothiers threatened by the removal of protection for their trade, and subjected to polemic about his family's slavery interests, was beaten by Lord Milton. Ryley [formerly Romney], Samuel William (17591837), Actor and author. Educated in Kensington & Fulham, although apprenticed to the woollen trade in Yorkshire, he eloped with his master's daughter and the married at Gretna Green. He was a jobbing actor, who later won a little more fame with his autobiography. "Ryley's life exhibits, with painful clarity, the precarious existence of the supporting actor of his daysnatching, at one moment, at dreams of fame and, at the next, facing the reality of poor shelter and meagre rations" (ODNB). This caricature seems true to life, as he was described as being very thin.‎

‎At the foot is written 'we three, fools be.' The character on the left seems to have a jester's hat on. On May 13th, 1807, William Wilberforce, Lord Milton, the Hon. Henry Lascelles (afterwards Earl of Harewood), and Mr. Walter Fawkes were nominated as parliamentary candidates in the Castle-Yard at York. This was the first contested election in the seat for 66 years. The struggle was also memorable on account of the vast expense that Lascelles incurred. William Wilberforce, whose party almost entirely lacked organization, was head of the poll. There were concerns that Wilberforce allied himself with a candidate whose wealth was based on the slave trade, and he was forced to write to the electors to explain himself. Perhaps it is Lascelles and Wilberforce who are mocked as the electors here. The caricature has been drawn onto the reverse of a scarce caricature engraving, of "Mr Riley in Solomon". This is most probably Samuel William Ryley (1759-1837), actor, and author of The Itinerant, or Memoirs of an Actor, 1808. 208mm x 248mm.‎

‎The Nunnery Question A Report of the Great Catholic Meeting held as St Martins Hall, Long Acre, March 21 1854. To which is added the Catholic Declaration, with the list of signatures.‎

‎London: Burns and Lambert 1854 ‎

‎First Edition. Pamphlet. 8vo. Title page slightly darkened with a small closed tear and a couple of ink spots to the margin. Otherwise a clean copy. Recent paper wrappers. In 1853, Mr Chambers was given leave by parliament to introduce a bill to the Commons. The premise of the bill ('A bill to facilitate personal liberty in certain cases') gave wide access to a panel of commissioners to enter Roman Catholic convents with the aim of securing the freedom of those held there against their will. Catholics viewed this as a scurrilous anti-Catholic attack, and denied that any nuns were prisoners. They viewed the legislation as a reaction to the recent restoration of the Catholic hierarchy in England and Wales. The list of signatories to the rear begins with the Lords, whose names are led by Charles H Clifford & Francis Stonor.‎

‎Certaine sermons or homilies, appointed to be read in churches : In the time of the late Queen Elizabeth of famous memory. And now thought fit to be reprinted by authority from the King's most excellent Majesty. [Bound together with] The Second Tome of Homilies, of Such Matters as Were Promised and Entituled in the former part of the Homilies.‎

‎London John Norton for Joyce Norton 1633 ‎

‎A nice copy of this two volume work, unfortunately lacking the title page to Volume I. The volume starts on gather A. Original full leather boards, with a touch of bumping / edgewear to the boards. Recent spine with titles and date to the spine. There is a little water staining to the work, particularly to the edges, and a slight nicking to the edges of the blank front end paper. Some darkening / foxing, again particularly to the edges. Owner's inscriptions to the inside front board and to the 2nd end paper. (IWe think what is laid in as the first end paper is a later addition, when the spine was replaced - the second end paper appears from condition and inscriptions to be the original one). Also lacking is leaf 3I2 (page 99/100) with the text here also lacking. Bizarrely, a full page plate, dating from 1814 has been laid in to face page 275. This is an engraving by Wm Craig and L. Brown, showing national liberty crushing the nations of Europe. This is perhaps laid in here as it is opposite an homily against Disobedience and Wilfull rebellion. This long homily, published in various forms, is important, as it was part of the celebrations following the failure of the rebellions against Queen Elizabeth I. To the end of the work is "A thankesgiving for the suppression of the last rebellion." 1-98, [vi], 1-98 101-320 [iv]. 290 x 210 mm (11œ x 8Œ inches).‎
