Mort prématurément il y a quelques années, Renzo De Felice (1929-1996) "a été, et restera probablement à l'avenir, l'un des historiens les plus controversés de la seconde moitié du XXe siècle, mais aussi un des plus actifs et des plus productifs", et de toute façon "l'un des plus importants rénovateurs du débat international sur le phénomène fasciste", comme écrit Emilio Gentile dans sa préface, qui retrace la formation et l'itinéraire intellectuels de l'historien. Auteur d'une monumentale biographie de Mussolini en huit volumes ainsi que de nombreuses études sur l'antisémitisme, le syndicalisme révolutionnaire, le futurisme, la République de Salo, etc., De Felice fonde en 1970 la revue Storia contemporanea, qui devient l'organe d'une véritable école historiographique. Dans Les interprétations du fascisme De Felice offre une remarquable synthèse de sa méthode et passe en revue les principales interprétations fournies du début des années 20 à la fin des années 60. Aussi éloigné de ceux qui prononcent des jugements de valeur avant même de reconstituer une histoire, que d'une historiographie "platement descriptive", De Felice illustre ici le propos d'Angelo Tasca : "Pour nous, définir le fascisme c'est avant tout en écrire l'histoire", c'est-à-dire "en reconstruire la réalité et la dialectique dans le temps et dans l'espace".
