Over de persoonlijkheid van Johannes Vermeer, een van de beroemdste Nederlandse schilders uit de 17de eeuw is maar weinig bekend. We weten dat hij trouwde met de katholieke Catharina Bolnes, wiens familie hecht verbonden was met de gemeenschap van Jezu eten in Delft. In dit boek toont Gregor J.M. Weber, hoofd beeldende kunst van het Rijksmuseum, aan dat Vermeer zelf ook daadwerkelijk een katholiek huishouden nastreefde. Ook het verband tussen de artistieke ambities van de jonge Vermeer en zijn katholieke omgeving komt aan bod. Vermeers unieke behandeling van het licht, perceptie en perspectief wordt onderzocht en gekoppeld aan de bijzondere interesse van de Jezu eten voor de camera obscura, het instrument van licht en zien bij uitstek. Met zijn onderzoek plaatst Weber de persoon en de kunst van Vermeer in een nieuwe context, die tot nu toe slechts zijdelings werd aangestipt.
