Magnifique ouvrage sur les monuments de Rome et de la Rome antique.Les notices descriptives des monuments sont imprimées en français et en anglais.Il est illustré de 62 planches gravées à l'aquatinte, y compris le frontispice.Y sont notamment représentés le Colisée, le Panthéon, la colonne Trajan, le Temple de Vénus, la Cascade de Tivoli, la Grotte de Neptune, le Pont de Civita Castellana, le Temple de Bacchus, la Villa Médicis, etc.Un des exemplaires avec les planches rehaussées en couleurs.Fils de l'éditeur parisien Jacques-François Mérigot (vers 1720-1799), Jacques Mérigot (Paris, 1760-Londres, 1824) fut l'élève du peintre et graveur Joseph-Marie Vien en 1778. Il exerça ensuite son métier à Paris puis résida à Rome quelques années avant de s'établir à Londres où il fut connu sous le nom de James Merigot.Bel exemplaire en reliure pastiche de Devauchelle.Brunet, III, col. 1651. London, 1797 + 1799. Small folio. 29,5 x 23,5 cm. Both parts bound together in a nice comtemporary brown half calf with blindstamped and gilt spine. Rebacked. The original spine missing the upper part relaid over lighter brown calf. re-enforced with green cloth at the inner hinges, which were otherwise split. Single small wormtracts to upper inner margin, far from affecting text or plates. Corners bumped and wear to extremities. Marbled edges. A bit of offsetting from some of the plates at the end, but internally generally very nice and clean. Frontispice, 2 ff. (title-page & Preface), 30 plates, 30 ff., 1 f. (contents) + 1 f (title-page), 30 plates, 30 ff., 1 f. (contents). Each of the 60 plates is followed by a leaf of axplanatory text in English and French. Fully complete with the frontispiece and all 60 plates listed in the tables of contents.
First edition of this lovely book of views of Rome, one of the uncoloured ordinary paper copies, but with the plates in excellent quality. The work was reprinted twice, ca. 1805 and 1819, the impressions of both being very inferior to those of the first edition. Lowndes III:1537
