------- Govert Flinck was one of Rembrandt's most talented pupils, but he was much more than that. After his apprenticeship, he quickly developed his own style, which earned him an excellent reputation among his contemporaries. As a result, it was Flinck who, in 1659, received the most prestigious commission of any painter in Amsterdam in the seventeenth century: the painted decorations for the galleries of the new City Hall on Dam Square. His death four months later meant that these decorations were never completed.
