Photographe, sculpteur et cinéaste, il est avant tout célèbre pour ses installations. Il se définit lui-même comme peintre, alors qu'il a, depuis longtemps, abandonné ce support. Se développant dans le contexte parisien des années 1970, luvre dAnnette Messager, proche de celles dartistes comme Christian Boltanski (dont elle est l'épouse), Jean Le Gac, Jean-Pierre Le Boul'ch, Sarkis, ou Paul-Armand Gette, relève de ces démarches singulières qualifiées de « mythologies individuelles ». Présenté par Harald Szeemann à la « Documenta V » dans le cadre des Mythologies individuelles, Le Gac est alors intégré dans un Narrative Art aux côtés de Boltanski, Messager ou Jochen Gerz. Son travail rejoint progressivement la présentation classique de la peinture : photos et textes (eux-mêmes photographiés) s'organisent en panneaux encadrés, sans renoncer à l'aspect livresque (Le Peintre de Tamaris, 1989, Introduction aux uvres d'un artiste dans mon genre, 1987).
