This book is the outcome of a collaborative research project between LGC, the Leuven Museumsite and STUK Arts Centre. On the occasion of the centennial anniversary of Constantin Meunier's death, the contributions by Sura Levine and Marjan Sterckx examine the importance of Meunier for Leuven, where he taught at the Arts Academy from 1887 until 1897 and lived from 1887 until 1894. As a complement, four authors from various disciplinary backgrounds address the actuality of Meunier's social realist thought today. Virginie Devillez investigates the possibilities of a social realist art after the debacle of socialist realism, focussing on the Belgian 20th century artistic context and the work of contemporary Belgian artists and filmmakers such as the freres Dardenne. Hilde Van Gelder specifically zooms in on the possibilities of making a social or critical realist art, comparing closely the work of Meunier and Sekula. Human rights specialist Eva Brems discusses the impact of contemporary globalisation on the current viability of social rights. Labour law expert Marc De Vos screens the jurisdictional actuality of social realist thought today, especially in respect to issues such as pensions and the greying of society.

De son vivant la notoriete de Meunier n'eut rien a envier a celle de Rodin. Un siecle plus tard, malgre une courageuse tentative de rehabilitation en Belgique, a l'instigation du marchand d'art Maurice Tzwern, suivi par les milieux academiques, le souvenir du grand Constantin Meunier se meurt lentement. Publicatie naar aanleiding van de heropening van het museum Constantin Meunier De presentatie is toegespitst op de evolutie van de kunstenaar tussen 1875 en 1905, zijn 'tweede leven', zoals hij het zelf uitdrukte. Tijdens die laatste dertig jaar van zijn leven groeide Meuniers aandacht voor de sociale en industri le ontwikkelingen in Belgi en zette hij in op realistische voorstellingen, aanvankelijk in schilderijen en tekeningen. Daarna, vanaf 1885, keerde hij terug naar de beeldhouwkunst, waarin hij zich ontpopte tot een van de allergrootsten. In het spoor van doeken als De gebarsten smeltkroes ontstonden belangrijke beelden als De smeder, een hele kolonie van gipsen en bronzen beelden die hun tijd diepgaand hebben be nvloed en nog heel lang zouden nazinderen in de realistische kunst van de eerste decennia van de 20e eeuw. GESCHIEDENIS VAN DE COLLECTIE Aan het einde van zijn leven liet Constantin Meunier (1831-1905) deze mooie atelierwoning bouwen. In 1936 werd het gebouw, met zijn meer dan 700 werken tellende collectie, door de Belgische staat aangekocht en drie jaar later voor het publiek opengesteld. Het museum werd aan de Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van Belgi toegevoegd en in 1986 gerenoveerd. Sindsdien stelt het ongeveer 150 werken en documenten tentoon.
