Philipp IV. und Diego Velazquez sind die beiden Personlichkeiten, die die erste Halfte des 17. Jahrhunderts zum ? Goldenen Zeitalter? der spanischen Malerei werden lassen. Der kunstsinnige Konig sammelte schier unersattlich Gemalde und liess seine Palaste in und um Madrid reich damit ausstatten. Velazquez, der erste Maler des Konigs, lieferte fur diese Dekorationen nicht nur eigene Werke, sondern war auch mit Ankaufen und der Anordnung der Gemalde beschaftigt. Grosse Bilderserien wurden in Auftrag gegeben, etwa bei Peter Paul Rubens ein Zyklus von 60 mythologischen Historienbildern fur das konigliche Jagdschloss Torre de la Parada, bei Massimo Stanzione Gemalde zum Leben des heiligen Johannes des Taufers oder bei Claude Lorrain, Poussin und Dughet Landschaften. Sie zeichnen sich nicht nur durch ihre hohe Qualitat aus, sondern geben auch Aufschluss uber das barocke Weltbild, uber das Verstandnis von Herrschaft und Natur. Mit Werken von mehr als 20 europaischen Kunstlern eroffnet der Band Einblicke in die Sammlung Philipps IV., die auf die Maler der zweiten Halfte des 17.
