L'auteur de ce livre, Carl Justi (1832-1912), spécialiste de son oeuvre, fut professeur d'histoire de l'art et de philosophie à l'université de Marburg. Son approche biographique fut originale et particulièrement innovante, puisqu'il préférait utiliser la psychologie plutôt que les différents mouvements de l'histoire de la peinture pour analyser les intentions des artistes. Cet ouvrage richement illustré revient sur la vie, le travail, ainsi que sur la technique et la vision du monde de ce peintre majeur du XVIIe siècle --

Nice little volume of 1908 about the masterpieces by the spanish painter Diego Velazquez (1599-1660). Velazquez was the most important artist in the court of Felipe IV in baroque period.
