Stock (1901). 1 volume grand in-8, reliure en demi-maroquin rouge à coins (signée NOULHAC), dos à nerfs, auteur, titre et date drés, tête dorée, plas et dos de couverture conservés. Édition originale. Un des 80 exemplaires sur papier de Hollande (après 10 exemplaires sur papier de Chine). Publié en 1901, Sainte Lydwine de Schiedam appartient à la période catholique de Huysmans, après En route, La Cathédrale et L’Oblat. L’ouvrage est une hagiographie consacrée à Lydwine de Schiedam, mystique hollandaise du XVe siècle, canonisée par Léon XIII en 1890. Huysmans y fait de la souffrance corporelle, de la maladie et de la substitution mystique les éléments centraux d’une méditation spirituelle. Le sujet s’inscrit pleinement dans les préoccupations religieuses et esthétiques de la fin de l’œuvre de Huysmans : fascination pour les saints, le sacrifice, le corps souffrant, les formes extrêmes de l’expérience mystique et la survivance du Moyen Âge chrétien. L’auteur s’appuie notamment sur les anciennes vies de Lydwine, en particulier celles de Jean Brugman et de Thomas a Kempis, qu’il cite dans son avant-propos.
