Het is een 16de-eeuws prototype van de scheldroman. De oorspronkelijke Lazarillo (deel I in dit boek) verscheen voor de eerste maal in 1553 of 1954 en is het werk van een onbekend auteur. Het werd wel eens toegeschreven aan de beroemde Spaanse diplomaat en humanist uit de 16de eeuw, Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, maar de vakgeleerden zijn het tegenwoordig eens om deze stelling prijs te geven.
