First printing of Kemble's famous anti-slavery work which included the first printing of the word 'vegetarian', stating that: """"If I had had to be my own cook, I should inevitably become a vegetarian"". (p. 198). Her book is credited with influencing Britain's position of neutrality during the American Civil War despite the cotton industry's lobbying. Frances ""Fanny"" Kemble, a notable British actress from a theatre family in the early and mid-nineteenth century, married Pierce Mease Butler, an American heir to cotton, tobacco and rice plantations on the Sea Islands of Georgia. Kemble found, to her horror, that she was married to a slaveowner and they spent the winter of 1838-39 at the plantations, and Kemble kept a diary of her observations [the present work]. The journal circulated privately among her friends, but was not published until his husbands death in 1863, by the time of publishing the word probably had become more common. Sabin 37329

"L'histoire des Berbères d'Ibn Khaldoun est le plus vaste répertoire de faits historiques concernant l'Afrique du Nord. Tant que le savant de Slane ne l'eut pas traduit, l'histoire de ce pays, fut littéralement impossible à écrire. Depuis, cet ouvrage est resté le vade-mecum indispensable de tout arabisant, de tout historien, de tout géographe et même de toute personne cultivée s'intéressant aux choses de l'Afrique Mineure (). L'illustre historien tenait là ses renseignements de première main et, ne nous restât-il que son travail sur l'Afrique du Nord jusqu'au XIVe siècle, l'histoire de ce pays serait aussi complète que celle de n'importe quel autre pays musulman".Historien, sociologue, économiste, géographe, démographe, et homme d'État d'origine arabe Ibn Khaldoun (1332-1406) était issu d'une grande famille andalouse d'origine yéménite et chassée de la péninsule ibérique par la Reconquista. Il ne cessera durant sa vue d'analyser les changements sociaux et politiques dans le Maghreb et l'Espagne de son époque. Considéré comme un précurseur de la sociologie et démographie moderne, il insiste dans ses écrits d'histoire sur l'importance des sources, de leur authenticité et de leur vérification à l'aune de critères purement rationnels. Les savants européens du XIXe siècle considèrent Ibn Khaldoun comme l'un des plus grands philosophes du Moyen Âge. Georges Marçais affirme que "l'oeuvre d'Ibn Khaldoun est un des ouvrages les plus substantiels et les plus intéressants qu'ait produit l'esprit humain".Très bon exemplaire, très frais, complet des quatre volumes.
