Les comportements démographiques individuels et leur transformation au cours du temps constituent le principal objet d’étude de cet ouvrage. À travers l’étude du cours de la vie des habitants d’une région rurale de Belgique, il s’agit essentiellement de relier les comportements individuels à leur environnement immédiat, que celui-ci soit économique, familial où local. Il s’agit donc d’une monographie, sur un demi-siècle (1846-1900), du pays de Herve (région de Belgique francophone, située entre Liège et Verviers) plus spécifiquement centrée sur trois villages dont les registres de population ont été entièrement dépouillés. Ces registres recueillent en continu, à l’échelle de la commune, l’ensemble des événements démographiques, naissances, mariages, décès et migrations, qui surviennent à un individu entre deux recensements. Le dépouillement des registres des trois villages sur cinquante ans, soit 34.718 « histoires de vie », fournit le matériel de base pour cette analyse d’une société rurale confrontée notamment à la transition démographique. L'étude se divise en trois parties que l’on peut grossièrement résumer comme communauté, famille et individu. L'analyse successive de ces trois éléments donne un cadre d’ensemble cohérent qui décrit avec précision les acteurs de cette histoire rurale et leur environnement. Au final, cet ouvrage dresse un panorama complet, du moins en ce qui concerne les questions démographiques, de la vie dans une communauté rurale de Belgique dans la seconde moitié du XIXe siècle. Caveirac, fanatically intolerant, furnished the Bishops of Languedoc, consulted by Voyer d'Argenson, with the arguments calculated to reject the alleviation of the fate of the Protestants. The principal reason given for this softening being the depopulation and impoverishment which resulted from the revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the abbot was led to study the general problem of depopulation and he did so with care. Summary Between the fifth and ninth centuries AD, the peoples of Britain, Ireland, and their surrounding islands were constantly interacting - sharing cultures and ideas that shaped and reshaped their communities and the way they lived. The influence of religious figures from Ireland on the development of the Church in Britain was profound, and the fame of monasteries such as Iona, which they established, remains to this day. Yet with the exception of St Patrick, far less attention has been paid to the role of the Britons and Picts who travelled west into Ireland, despite their equally significant impact. This book aims to redress the balance by offering a detailed exploration of the evidence for British and Pictish men and women in the early medieval Irish Church, and asking what we can piece together of their lives from the often fragmentary sources. It also considers the ways in which writers of later ages viewed these migrants, and examines how the shaping of the 'migration narrative' throughout the centuries had a major effect on the way that the earliest centuries of the church came to be viewed in later years in both Scotland and Ireland. In doing so, this volume offers important new insights into our understanding of the relationships between Britain and Ireland in this period.
