‎Kijk als een kunstenaar Van theedoek tot terpentine: hoe schildertechnieken en materialen de kunstgeschiedenis be nvloeden Monica de Ruiter vertelt over beroemde Nederlandse schilderijen en hoe ze gemaakt zijn ? een verfrissende en inspirerende invalshoek om naar schilderkunst te kijken en erover te praten Als je naar een schilderij kijkt, vraag je je vast ook wel eens af hoe het gemaakt werd. Het is een vraag die Monica de Ruiter vaak krijgt wanneer ze rondleidingen geeft in het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Maar over het algemeen vind je in de gangbare kunstboeken opvallend weinig antwoorden op die vraag. Daarom is Kijk als een kunstenaar niet zomaar een boek over kunst; het laat zien welke uitdagingen kunstenaars tegenkomen bij het maken van een werk, welke stappen ze moeten zetten en welke beslissingen ze moeten nemen. De Ruiter laat via onderzoek en gesprekken met schilders en restauratoren oude en nieuwe meesters aan het woord over hoe ze werken en waarom precies op die manier. De betekenis van een werk, zo blijkt, hangt nauw samen met de techniek. Zo laat De Ruiter zien hoe het gebruik van de verf in de loop der eeuwen veranderde. In de middeleeuwen is het fijnschilderen in zwang, Rembrandt smeert zijn verf al dikker en bij Van Gogh liggen de verfklodders, en daarmee de directe emotie, op het doek. Over Van Gogh gesproken: door de uitvinding van de tube kon hij buiten in de natuur schilderen. Zijn voorgangers moesten hun verf ter plekke maken van pigmentpoeder, die natuurlijk bij elk zuchtje wind zou wegwaaien. Ze bleven dus in hun studio. Kortom: zonder tube geen Van Gogh. Onze oude en nieuwe schilderijen (en hun makers) zitten vol dergelijke verrassende verhalen die ons de kunstgeschiedenis op een andere en bijzondere manier vertellen. Zo wordt naar kunst kijken nog leuker.‎

‎With an ironic and brazen look, Lisette Model was able to capture in her shots the most grotesque aspects of postwar American society. Published on the occasion of the first Italian anthological exhibition dedicated to her, the volume retraces the successful work of Lisette Model, an artist of Austrian origin who had great importance in the development of photography in the Fifties and Sixties. Parallel to her teaching activity - she had among her students authors who later became famous such as Diane Arbus and Larry Fink - Lisette Model was an ironic and irreverent photographer, able to capture in her shots the most grotesque aspects of post-war American society. Alongside the most famous series - such as Promenade des Anglais, created in Nice, or the photographs dedicated to New Yorkers or the very suggestive ones made in jazz clubs - the book also proposes lesser-known projects, which account for her personal and sardonic photographic language. The close-up shots, the recurring use of the flash, the exasperated contrasts are the expedients that the author resorts to in order to accentuate the imperfections of the bodies and the coarse gestures of her subjects, transformed into the characters of a sneering human comedy: an approach to reality which made Lisette Model the forerunner of a way of using photography that would find full realization only in the following decades.‎

‎Summary Funerals were among the most extravagant princely ceremonies in Europe. At the end of the Middle Ages, they were grandiose affairs, carefully recorded, bringing together the emotions of both Court and People. The Renaissance heightened their effect, adding surprising elements borrowed from an Antiquity which was largely re-invented. The seventeenth century introduced ephemeral displays, elaborately constructed castrum doloris, dressed up with lavish facades and interior designs which transformed these sanctuaries into theatrical funeral pyres. Historians, anthropologists, and political scientists have long been interested in this subject, as can be seen from Ralph Giesey's celebrated work Le Roi est mort. Art historians have been attracted to the surviving decorations of tombs and funerary chapels. Yet historians of spectacle and of its ephemera have, hitherto, somewhat neglected a topic which is - nonetheless - at the heart of their concerns: with their elaborate settings, their costumes and decors, princely funerals challenge theatre and opera. It is within this context that experts from many disciplines attempt to trace the evolution of funeral ceremonies, which were much less static than is generally believed; to expose the gifts of the masters of these solemn occasions (and, indeed, of their predecessors, the heralds) who constantly devised subtle ways of capturing the attention of spectators and moving their emotions.
