‎Première édition collective, en partie originale, des oeuvres de Mariotte. C'est dans cet ouvrage qu'apparaît pour la première fois le Traité des mouvements du pendule. Il est illustré de 25 gravures sur cuivre ainsi qu'une belle vignette à chacun des deux titres. Il contient l'ensemble des oeuvres de ce touche-à-tout qui s'est aussi bien intéressé à la mécanique, qu'à l'optique, l'hydrodynamique, la logique ou encore la botanique. On lui doit la loi de Mariotte, formulée par Boyle, relative à la pression et au volume de gaz parfait, le flacon de Mariotte pour analyser la pression atmosphérique ou encore la tache de Mariotte, point de l'oeil dépourvu de récepteurs. Anti-dogmatique, il s'est toujours attaché à la démonstration expérimentale en physique comme en biologie. Il est également l'un des premiers membres de l'Académie des sciences telles que créée par Colbert en 1666, place qu'il occupe jusqu'à sa mort en 1684. Ouvrage peu commun. Marita Mathijsen maakt al jarenlang de Nederlandse literatuur van de negentiende eeuw toegankelijk. Keer op keer laat ze zien ze dat er heel wat meer te beleven viel dan Multatuli of de Tachtigers. Mathijsen rekent af met het cliche van een jansaliegeest, dat in het collectieve geheugen lijkt gekerfd. This volume analyses the international mobility of sculptors and their work in the nineteenth century. The creation of nation-states at that time coincided with an increasingly international outlook shared by artists, their commissioners, sellers, buyers and critics. Sculptors were encouraged to study abroad, and were recognized for their experience and success overseas. As they were very much dependent on commissions, they had to travel to provide for their revenues. While abroad, they were nonetheless expected to represent their nation and showcase their e essays in this collection reflect upon the theoretical and practical implications of the many aspects of transnationality, travel and (cultural) mobility for nineteenth-century sculptors, their work and their careers, by addressing the role of, among others, education, execution, commissions, exhibitions, art criticism and the art market. The main focus is on French, Belgian and Italian sculptors and their works but other countries are represented too, and well-known as well as lesser-known sculptors, through general articles and case studies. Tom Verschaffel is professor in cultural history at KU Leuven.
