The Wunderkammer, or "cabinet of curiosities," saw collectors gathering objects from many strands of artistic, scientific, and intellectual endeavor, in an ambitious attempt to encompass all of humankind's knowledge in a single room. From the Grand Duke Francesco I de' Medici and Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II to Archduke Ferdinand II of Habsburg, these aristocratic virtuosos acquired, selected, and displayed the objects in real-life catalogues that represented the entire world--spanning architecture, interior design, painting, sculpture, gemology, geology, botany, biology and taxonomy, astrology, alchemy, anthropology, ethnography, and history. Marvel at the unicorn horns (narwhal tusks), gems, rare coral growths, Murano glasswork, paintings and peculiar mechanical automata. Browse through illustrations of exotic and mythical creatures and discover the famed "Coburg ivories," an astounding collection of crafted artifacts. These collections are nothing short of a journey through time, from the Renaissance and Age of Discovery, the Mannerist and Baroque periods, up to the present day. Although many of these cabinets of curiosities no longer exist, others have been meticulously reconstructed, and new ones born. These marvelous cabinets of curiosities can now be explored by all in this collection. To realize this mammoth undertaking, Massimo Listri traveled to seven European countries over several decades; the result is a set of gorgeous photographs, an authoritative yet accessible introduction, and detailed commentary on each of the 19 chambers highlighting the most remarkable items in each collection. Discover how these timeless treasures both describe and defined civilization, the modern concept of the museum, and our very knowledge of the universe.

Summary Published anonymously in 1733, Memoirs of the Twentieth Century is one of the earliest futuristic novels known in Anglophone and Euro-American literature. It foregrounds an acceleration of history brought about by an increasing degree of global interconnectedness, and the exclusion of prophetism and astrology as credible ways to know the future. The work of Samuel Madden, an Irish writer and philanthropist of Whig sympathies, it consists of a collection of diplomatic letters composed in the 1990s, which the narrator claims were brought to him from the time to come by a supernatural entity. Through these correspondences, twentieth-century world scenarios are spread out before the reader, in which British naval power rules the waves and international commerce, while the transnational scheming of the Jesuits threatens the independence of weaker European courts. This book - which includes a study followed by an annotated edition of the text - assesses the cultural significance of this literary work, as an apt observatory on how historical time as a cultural construction was shaped, during the eighteenth century, by new forms of transnational circulation of information, and by the dubious space carved out in European culture by seventeenth- and early eighteenth-century debates on the nature of historical knowledge. Through and by means of the Memoirs case study, this volume aims to contribute to a wider cultural history of the future and speculative fiction. The novel's ironic distancing of beliefs considered to be superstitious and absurd - such as divination techniques and occult and magical disciplines - offers an exceptional testimony to the negotiation of the boundaries of verisimilitude and credibility within a religious enlightenment. Summary For manuscript historians, the Bible in the form of a codex represents a handcrafted object of the utmost importance: it was the sacred text par excellence and served as a vital reference point in the lives of medieval monks. In addition, it functioned as an indispensable tool for daily liturgical celebration, and as a study text and individual reading book for the purpose of moral edification. The manuscript collection of the Montecassino Abbey presents an exemplary case study, both for the total number of biblical manuscripts it preserves (just under a hundred, and for the diversity of types (complete 'monolithic' Bibles, Old and/or New Testament sequences of varying size and physiognomy, and individual glossed books with commentary beside the text), as well as for the presence of a significant group of codices in Beneventan minuscule produced for internal use within the same Abbey or in its dependencies in a period centered around the eleventh century (with sporadic extensions into the twelfth and thirteenth). The present catalogue aims to deepen our current knowledge of the presence, transmission and reception of the Bible in one of the most important and emblematic medieval Benedictine monasteries. Summary Resulting from the international conference "The Italian Maiolica in the Renaissance. Studies and Research" (Assisi, 9-11 September 2016), this volume brings together contributions by experts from various national and international institutions, and in particular from museums housing dedicated collections of Renaissance ceramics. The volume, edited by Giulio Busti, Franco Cocchi e Mauro Cesaretti, thus provides a state of the art on historical and ceramological research about Italian Renaissance majolica. Two opening essays by professor emeritus Bruno Toscano and professor Timothy Wilson (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford) set the stage for the three thematic sections that follow. The contributions gathered in these sections respectively offer (1) a new interpretation of collections, collectors and museums, (2) a discussion of current tendencies in the research, and (3) an exploration of ceramic production before and after the Renaissance.

An adopted Roman, but born in Brazil in 1908 to Italian immigrant parents, Elio Luxardo (Sorocaba, 1908 ? Milan, 1969) is perhaps the greatest representative of that generation of photographers who found themselves immersed in Italy in the 1930s, while clearly differentiating themselves from their colleagues of the time. A master craftsman of the darkroom, he arrived in Rome in 1932 and grew professionally during the period when the Cinecittà film studios were being developed, cultivating his talent by portraying the actors and actresses of the time. But it was in his studio, far from the film sets, that he brought his inventive flair to the highest level, confining his work to a fascinating and intense mise en scène, from which he was able to extract a brilliant core of images dedicated exclusively to nude photography. The volume presents this intimate production of original photographs from the early 1930s, consisting of an unprecedented and engaging relationship between light and shadow. Fascinated by Greek and Roman sculpture, the male nude alternates admirably with the female nude, in a comparison that reveals the clash between two different identities: on the one hand, an involuntary process of observance of the dogmas of the time, and on the other, a tangible trace of his youthful spirit, nurtured in the lush and free atmosphere of Brazil. The man?s strength and vigour are immediately apparent in the representation of the male nude, which, however, intersects perfectly with the elusive eroticism of the female nude, a woman?s body far removed from the rhetoric of ?home, country, family? and the icon of the ?angel of the hearth?. This existential double game meant that his nude photographs, which did not fully comply with the canons of his time and those of the following decades, disappeared. His original, vigorous and seductive images have now finally re-emerged, finding light and visibility in a significant tribute to the artist. Culturele verscheidenheid is iets moois.
