‎Avitus of Vienne is the author of the five poetic books of the Spiritual History celebrating the importance of Christ in baptismal catechesis by the glorification of the patriarchs Adam, Noah and Moses. Catholic bishop belonging to the Gallo-Roman aristocracy, Avitus is a man of great classical learning. The present study examines Avitus? poetic style, by combining a narratological approach with the methods of traditional philology. This analysis highlights the importance of the two auctorial voices constructing the poem: the voice of the bishop, formed by the practice of the liturgy of the Word, and the voice of the poet, steeped in rhetoric and paying tribute to classical poetics. These crossing voices produce a poem accessible to a large audience, whether contemporary or posterior to the 6th century ? we know that the poem has enjoyed a wide circulation during the Middle Ages. Secondly, the analysis focuses on the construction of the poetic narrative, explores the adaptation of the epic codes to the transmission of the Christian faith and emphasizes Avitus? debt to the Latin epic poets. Finally, the stylistic and metrical study proves the perfect mastery he has of the hexameter. Avit de Vienne est l?auteur des cinq chants de l?Histoire spirituelle, qui célèbre l?importance du Christ dans la catéchèse baptismale, par la glorification des patriarches Adam, Noé et Moïse. Évêque catholique appartenant à l?aristocratie gallo-romaine, Avit est un lettré d?une grande culture latine. La présente étude examine son écriture poétique au moyen d?une approche narratologique croisée avec les méthodes de la philologie traditionnelle. Il en ressort l?importance des deux voix auctoriales construisant le poème : la voix de l?évêque, formé par la pratique de la liturgie de la Parole, et celle du poète, pétri de rhétorique et rendant hommage à la poétique classique. Ce mélange des voix auctoriales produit un poème accessible à un large public, contemporain mais aussi postérieur au VIe s. ? le poème connaîtra une grande diffusion au Moyen Âge. L?analyse proposée permet de saisir la construction du récit poétique, de montrer l?adaptation des codes épiques à la t ransmission de la foi chrétienne et de souligner la dette d?Avit envers les poètes épiques latins. ‎Jean Fouquet a fait accomplir un pas de géant à la peinture française du XVe siècle. Par ses illustrations de livres enluminés, il innove dans tous les domaines de la représentation. Les Heures d'Étienne Chevalier constituent son chef-d'?uvre. Ce précieux ouvrage fut dépecé au XVIIIème siècle et ses admirables miniatures converties en autant de petits tableaux. Quarante-sept d'entre eux sont conservés, dont quarante au musée Condé de Chantilly. L'ouvrage de Nicole Reynaud offre une reconstitution parfaitement documentée de l'ensemble du livre d'Heures d'Étienne Chevalier. L'auteur étudie chacune des miniatures comme un vrai tableau, et la situe également dans le livre de dévotion où chaque miniature a sa place et son sens. De nombreuses photographies de comparaison permettent d'expliquer l'héritage artistique dont disposait Fouquet tout en soulignant l'originalité de l'invention et la marque du genre du peintre. ‎Pour Hegel, Jakob Boehme était "le premier philosophe allemand". Né en 1575, mort en 1624, il composera une vingtaine d'ouvrages sans pouvoir les faire connaître. Le premier d'entre eux l'ayant fait condamner comme hérétique et emprisonner, il ne put obtenir sa liberté qu'à la condition de renoncer a écrire. Rien de surprenant à cette condamnation. Comme Galilée, Jakob Boehme avait raison trop tôt. Sa pensée, proche par certains aspects de celle de Teilhard de Chardin, annonçait la vision du monde née des découvertes de la physique contemporaine. On comprend que Basarab Nicolescu, docteur ès sciences physiques, physicien-théoricien au CNRS, ait été fasciné par la pensée du philosophe allemand. Il y trouve l'occasion de plaider pour le rapprochement de la science et des traditions religieuses et pour une approche transdisciplinaire des connaissances de notre temps, condition nécessaire, selon lui, une nouvelle Renaissance. ‎Cornelis van Poelenburch was one of the very few painters of the Dutch Golden Age to acquire international renown during his lifetime. Only three Dutch artists were honoured with mentions by all of the seventeenth-century biographers who included Netherlandish artists, the others being Rembrandt and Gerrit Dou. His paintings were prized by well-to-do and often aristocratic collectors who were willing to pay high prices for them. Grand-Duke Cosimo II de? Medici, for example, kept four of Poelenburch?s paintings in his private quarters and Stadholder Frederick Henry and his consort owned more works by him than any other Dutch artist. He was a pupil of the influential Utrecht painter Abraham Bloemaert, worked for eight years in Italy, and except for a period of four years when he lived in London and received an annual stipend from King Charles I, spent the rest of his life in Utrecht. Poelenburch?s idyllic, mostly small-sized landscapes on copper or panel and done in a highly refined style and technique usually feature a ?history?: a biblical, mythological or pastoral subject. Nowadays he is known primarily as the leading artist of the first generation of ?Italianate? landscape painters, but in his own time he was lauded mainly for his lively figures with their crisp contours and animated gestures. From the mid-nineteenth century, Poelenburch?s paintings came to be dismissed as ?un-Dutch? and were subsequently neglected and forgotten, together with those of many other seventeenth-century painters who did not fit into the mould of ?Dutch realism?. This first comprehensive monograph on the artist includes a catalogue of his works, along with a discussion of all of his approximately 290 known paintings (all reproduced), and chapters covering his biography, the reception of his art in his own time and in later centuries, and his remarkable position on the seventeenth century art market. ‎This book is devoted to a remarkable aspect of Rubens painted production. It investigates and catalogues not only works that Ludwig Burchard (1886?1960) gathered into the category of Study Heads, but also head studies by artists closely connected to Rubens's workshop which were demonstrably used in his paintings. The existence of a stock of study heads or tronies allowed Rubens and his collaborators to exploit the same figures in many different contexts and create satisfying variety among the numerous characters involved in mythological, biblical or historical scenes. In Rubens?s work, study heads constitute an exceptional type of painting in that they were created not as autonomous works of art, but as a means to an end, an indispensable part of his artistic practice. Yet, even in this marginal category of work, Rubens achieves maximum artistic expression with an economy of means, as for example in the iconic Four Studies of the Head of an African Man in the Brussels Museum. The originals of the study heads remained together until the sale of Rubens?s possessions at his death in 1640. Over the centuries, many of Rubens?s tronies have undergone transformation. Panels featuring several heads were cut up quite early on to be sold as separate pictures on the art market, and some tronies were converted by later artists into specific characters or even genre scenes by adding extra planks of wood and giving the heads distinctive clothes and attributes. This book aims to reconstruct as far as possible the original appearance of Rubens?s tronies, aided by the evidence of copiesand technical research on the works themselves.‎
