In the winter of 1986, artist Franklin Engeln addresses his first letter to painter Philippe Vandenberg. 'Good correspondence is rare,' Vandenberg writes in his reply to Engeln. What follows is an exchange as flourishing as it is short-lived. The two artists get to know each other at Richard Foncke's gallery in Ghent. It does not stop at meetings in the gallery. The friends regularly have dinner together and occasionally visit each other at home or at their studios. At the time of the correspondence, Vandenberg lived and worked in Ghent, while Engeln lived and worked in Antwerp, where he still lives and works. The letters illuminate Vandenberg's oeuvre in a different way, in which words such as poetry, humanity and tenderness are central. In addition, they offer an insight into Engeln's little-known work. As a historical source, the correspondence sheds light on the artist's thoughts in the studio, as well as the friendship and discussion points between the two letter writers. The layering and complexity of their work emerges explicitly. Unlike with digital communication, the artists took time to think about their response, writing the entire letter by hand and even adding drawings. It is an intimate mode of communication, originally created in the private sphere and now gaining public status. The book is illustrated with numerous, mostly unpublished drawings, paintings and photographs by both artists from the period of the correspondence. The correspondence between Franklin Engeln and Philippe Vandenberg, compiled by Sofie Frederix, is part of the multi-annual research project Ghent, playing field of the visual arts (1957-1987) (KASK & Conservatorium (HOGENT - Howest)) by Godart Bakkers, Koen Brams, Wouter De Vleeschouwer, Sofie Frederix and Naninga Lens. The project is funded by the HOGENT Arts Research Fund and Culture Ghent, the culture department of the City of Ghent.

The work of Julia Sp nola (b. 1979) departs from an intuitive and empirical practice, in which there is no place for metaphors or symbolisms. She is interested in the laws of physics such as connectivity, transference, movement, which have been present in her practice since earlier works. "One night in Madrid, a lamp came swirling down, as if it were a butterfly. It just missed the table and it did not break. The lamp was still burning, but it was hanging at a different level than usual: it had left the ceiling. Suddenly, a funny dialogue developed, a play with various lamps. In Demoen's work, things are not entirely like Richard Wolheim once objected to Ernst Gombrich, claiming that in the case of a theory of the double, our attention must be divided between two things or issues. There is more going on and down for that matter. Demoen (b. 1965) presents collages with cut-up echoes, which in their fragmented state function as motif-protagonists in a mise en sc ne that has fallen on its back and has not found its place yet. The studio, geometry, magazine sensationalism and the art history book are cut up and practised while dancing, as if the artistic practice were a lost nightclub with entering daylight that is used as outfit. Demoen dances the gesture till it blindly follows the work of art. (.) The scattered motifs have been cut up. They show how in the Western tradition beauty was defined by the sublime, and no design could cope with that, unless it becomes ornamental and at a certain moment also boring if radiation is impossible. When things get out of hand, a gesture playfully tries to regain control. One by one, the cards are played on the worktable. They are presented to the spectator and hidden from our glance by another playing card. The memory of the spectator is exercised, stimulated, annoyed and teased. What makes the whole thing mysterious, is that despite all the historical references in Demoen's work, the reference as such is thrown back on its own, though it is like a collection of ellipses and ovals." De in 1928 opgerichte ClAM (Congr s Internationaux d'Architecture Moderne) belichaamde ruim dertig jaar een dynamische vernieuwingsbeweging, met wereldwijd honderden leden onder wie prominenten als Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius en Sigfried Giedion. De Nederlandse architect en stedenbouwkundige Cornelis van Eesteren (1897-1988) was van 1930 tot 1947 voorzitter van deze organisatie en heeft in het bestaan ervan een belangrijke rol gespeeld. Dit boek geeft voor het eerst inzicht in Van Eesterens betekenis voor de CIAM en werpt daarbij een nieuw licht op de geschiedenis van deze avant-gardeassociatie. Centraal staat het legendarische vierde congres over 'De Functionele Stad' in 1933, dat onder leiding van Van Eesteren werd voorbereid door de Nederlandse ClAM-groep. Rode draad in het verhaal vormt het principe van collectiviteit; het avant-gardistische streven naar samenwerking als basis voor de creatie van een in alle opzichten eigentijdse menselijke leefomgeving. Op grond van overvloedig archiefmateriaal wordt de ontwikkeling van CIAM van binnenuit geschetst en ontstaat - onder de oppervlakte van de 'offici le' geschiedenis - een beeld van haar zoektocht naar een eigen positie en strategie binnen het architectonische en stedenbouwkundige spectrum. Aan bod komen de positiebepaling van de CIAM tijdens de beginjaren, het idee van de CIAM als werkgemeenschap dat vooral leefde onder de Nederlandse en de Zwitserse leden, de voorbereidingen van 'De Functionele Stad' en de uitgevoerde stadsanalyses als bijdrage aan een 'vergelijkende stedenbouw'. Eind jaren dertig raakte de CIAM in een crisis, die ondanks een wederopleving na de oorlog niet meer zou worden overwonnen. De snel groeiende vereniging werd een mondiaal instituut, dat in 1959 door de rebel lerende jongeren van 'Team 10' werd opgeheven.
