Het begin van de negentiende eeuw was een turbulente tijd: de eeuwenlange zekerheden van het Ancien Régime waren nog maar net van de kaart geveegd door de Franse Revolutie en heel Europa kreeg al meteen te maken met de Napoleontische Oorlogen. Er kwamen nieuwe sociale klassen naar voren: de burgerij en de arbeiders. Liberalisme en de Industriële revolutie breken door. Met andere woorden, de hele maatschappij was in sneltreinvaart aan het veranderen. Deze overgang was niet in het minst te voelen in de artistieke wereld. Als reactie op het rationele van de 18e eeuwse verlichting ontstond er een tegenbeweging die nadruk wou leggen op het gevoel, op de mystiek van het verleden, de passie en hartstochten: de Romantiek. Deze reactie is in heel Europa voelbaar maar toch omvat de huidige canon van romantische schilders slechts een handvol namen als William Turner, John Constable, Théodore Gericault of Eugène Delacroix. Summary The question of personality is a problematic one, beset by complications of cultural distance, the layers of the past, and the limitations of the source material. Duizenden kunstwerken in Nederlands openbaar bezit, van Vermeers Liefdesbrief tot Jeroen Bosch' Verloren Zoon, zijn verworven 'met steun van de Vereniging Rembrandt.' Wat dat betekent, en hoe dat in zijn werk ging en nog altijd gaat, daarover vertelt dit boek. Het laat zien hoe de Vereniging het Rijksmuseum Amsterdam in 1900 hielp bij het kopen van zijn eerste Rembrandt, maar ook dat het niet bleef bij de zorg om behoud en terugkeer van het artistieke erfgoed. Tiziano Vecellio (c.1488/90-1576) - known in English simply as Titian - was a remarkably versatile painter, equally comfortable with a wide range of genres and subjects. Dit rijk geïllustreerd naslagwerk over het leven en de strijd van de abstracte kunstenaar Jozef Peeters (1895-1960) biedt een boeiende kijk in de Belgische en Europese avant-garde van de dolle jaren 1920, met Antwerpen als uitvalsbasis. Indrukwekkend overzicht van het oeuvre van beeldhouwer Peter Rogiers Peter Rogiers is een van de bekendste Belgische beeldhouwers, wiens werk wereldwijd geexposeerd wordt en deel uitmaakt van tal van museumcollecties. Hij had onlangs soloshows in Berlijn, Parijs, Brussel, Antwerpen, New York en Los Angeles, en zijn werk werd opgenomen in de prestigieuze Louis Vuitton Building in Los Angeles. Als eerste kunstenaar ooit krijgt hij in 2016 voor de tweede keer, na vijftien jaar, een retrospectieve tentoonstelling in het Middelheimmuseum. In het verleden toonde Rogiers onconventionele, hybride sculpturen in polyurethaan, en recentelijk experimenteerde hij met vormen in aluminium, die door kunstcritica Lilly Wei in het magazine Art in America als echte highlights werden geprezen: ?Hoewel Peter Rogiers? sculpturen op het eerste gezicht alarmerend zijn, hebben ze ook fabuleuze kwaliteiten die elk gevoel van kwaadwilligheid tenietdoen. Ze bestaan uit gelijke delen barok, futurisme, surrealisme en kitsch, en ze belichamen zowel mimetische als verzonnen elementen. Op een ironische manier ontwricht Rogiers de integriteit van het figuratieve, door gezichten en ledematen (als dat is wat ze zijn) op onverwachte plaatsen te laten opduiken.?
