Het overheersen van het figuratieve wandtapijt is ontegensprekelijk. De strenge uitvoering van het karton (nooit banaal noch verward), maakt het hele verschil; het wordt uitgewerkt met de wetenschap en de kunde van het rapport van de textuurbinding. Alzo het hele weven lang, flink ritmisch, maar doordacht, worden de opeenvolgende scheuten van de inslag gelegd van een tapijt met sterke zelfkanten. Dan ontstaat het schone handwerk hoog gekleurd, levendig expressief het onderwerp, en de opvallende aanwezigheid van de personages en hunne houdingen in de kern en de vreugde van het oeuvre, goud en zilver! La predominance de la tapisserie figurative est incontestable. Elle se caracterise par l'execution stricte du carton (jamais banal ni confus), qui se dessine selon la science et la pratique du rapport de l'armure de la texture. Ainsi, tout au long du tissage, rythme solidement, mais reflechi, se posent les trames successives, d'un tapis aux fermes lisieres. Il en resulte le bel ouvrage, aux couleurs franches, vives dans l'expression du sujet, et la presence affirmee des personnages, de leurs attitudes dans le coeur et la joie de l'oeuvre, l'or et l'argent!

Il existe de nombreux travaux consacr s l?histoire de Namur. Cette abondance refl te le r le minent qu?a jou la cit sambrienne et mosane au cours des si cles. Toutefois, en raison de leur ge, la plupart des tudes sur le pass de Namur ne correspondent plus nos pr occupations. Bien plus, elles sont souvent caduques par rapport aux exigences de l?historiographie d?aujourd?hui. La conscience de ces lacunes a incit le professeur Despy, membre de notre Comit d?Histoire, mettre en chantier une nouvelle histoire de Namur. ?uvre collective, intitul e Namur. Le site, les hommes, celle-ci est explicite quant ses intentions. Elle se situe dans le droit fil d?une histoire urbaine qui a renouvel de fond en comble ses m thodes et ses concepts. Attentive aussi bien aux habitants qu? l? l ment physique dans lequel les premiers inscrivent leur histoire, elle n?h site pas s?affranchir de carcans d suets pour nouer un dialogue avec des disciplines voisines comme l?arch ologie ou la g ographie. D?embl e, il a fallu trancher le probl me des limites chronologiques. Si le choix d?un point de d part ne soul ve pas de difficult s, celui du terminus adquern est plus d licat. En d finitive, les arguments historiques et le souci de coh rence ont pr valu. On a pris le parti d?arr ter le r cit l?ann e 1750. Ce mill sime co ncide avec l? ge d?or de la cartographie militaire fran aise ancienne ? ce qui nous vaut une gerbe impressionnante de documents de premier ordre ? et avec l?apog e de l?expansion de la ville traditionnelle. Les bouleversements cons cutifs la r volution industrielle, la croissance d mographique, l?arriv e du chemin de fer vont faire clater la ville, qui essaime en dehors de son p rim tre s culaire. L?examen de ces mutations constitue un domaine en soi qu?il n? tait pas possible d?exposer ici. D s lors, la question du cadre spatial s?est trouv e son tour r solue. Le territoire dont il est question dans les pages qui suivent est bien celui de la ville de Namur intra muros, qui a grandi l?int rieur des enceintes successives, jusqu?aux ouvrages de Vauban, qui bornent son extension maximale sous l?Ancien R gime. Le projet du professeur Despy, relay par notre Comit d?Histoire tout entier, n?aurait pu tre men bonne fin sans le concours d?artisans qualifi s. Il nous est agr able de souligner que nous avons pu b n ficier de la comp tence d? rudits qui sont reconnus par leurs pairs comme les meilleurs historiens de Namur. M. Andr Dasnoy fait la lumi re sur les premiers tablissements humains Namur aux poques romaine et m rovingienne. M. Alain Dierkens d m le l? cheveau extraordinairement complexe du maillage paroissial. M. Georges Despy, qui est l?origine de cet ouvrage, s?attache au haut Moyen Age, tandis que M. L opold Genicot restitue le visage que pr sentait la ville aux yeux d?un visiteur en 1422. Mrae C cile Douxchamps-Lefevre nous entra ne dans le Namur de la Renaissance. Enfin, M. et Mme Philippe Jacquet-Ladrier condensent cent cinquante ans d?Ancien R gime.
