‎Summary This book explores the transmission of the letters of Leo the Great (pope, 440-461). After setting out the contours of Leo's papacy and the factors contributing to the sending and subsequent transmission of his letters to posterity, it deals in detail with around sixty collections of Leo's letters and over 300 manuscripts ranging in date from the sixth up to the sixteenth century. Each period of the Middle Ages is introduced as the context for collecting and copying the letters, and the relationships between the letter collections themselves are traced. ‎The D?sseldorf artist born in 1967 and who also resides in Berlin belongs to a generation of painters who question the authenticity of the medium as much as the provenance of its pictorial compositionality. Since the mid-1990s Christoph Steinmeyer has devoted himself to a magical symbolism, which leads both his subject matter and style of his painting into an area of hybridism, yet creating a dangerous but well-founded liaison. One might say that the surfaces of the luxurious interiors or the surfaces with their synthetic effect or the bold, colour-field still lifes of flowers look as though they have been melted in the flame of a Bunsen Burner. However, they aren't amalgamations in which mass-media images are merely transformed into painting or the ?stories? are faded out, but rather the artist refers to collective ideas of medially transmitted patterns and models that he transfers into a new and likewise imagined ideal type. nIn the most recent group of works this brand of magical symbolism takes an astonishing turn. The film sets that are made up of scenery from different scenes are embellished with symbolic props. These pointed image-within-an image constellations interrupt the time-space continuum of the interiors after having been additionally charged with titles such as ?Gilda?, ?Rebecca? or ?Violet?. Christoph Steinmeyer counters the apparent authenticity of his filmic black and white painting with grisalle, which upon closer inspection reveals a fine and detailed chromaticism. This style of painting convulses the beautiful appearance of the compositions like peristalsis- as if we were dealing with dream sequences that can only occur in films or indeed in the way Christoph Steinmeyer shows them to us. It is indeed a rarity to find such fantastical potential in painting. nThe book complete with its unusual format is the first publication to date on Christoph Steinmeyer's work.‎

‎Summary This volume contains the proceedings of the international conference on anonymous sermons, funded by the F.R.S.-FNRS and held on 16 May 2019 at the Université de Namur (Belgium), within the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters and the research centre Pratiques Médiévales de l'Écrit (PraME). It brings together scholars working on late antique and early medieval Latin preaching, and follows on previous volumes on Augustine and African sermons published in the Ministerium Sermonis subseries. The focus here is on Christian Latin preached texts, thought to date from the period c. 300-800 AD, which are not currently attributed to a known author. Long neglected because of their uncertain attribution, these sermons offer new material for the study of late antique and early medieval Christianity. ‎De Koning Boudewijnstichting geeft een publicatie uit over de 'Kruisdraging', een werk dat Victor Jacobs van Merlen en zijn kinderen aan het Erfgoedfonds schonken, zodat het in het Museum Mayer van den Bergh publiek toegankelijk zal zijn. De Kruisdraging in navolging van Jheronimus Bosch getuigt van het succes van de beeldtaal van Bosch in de zestiende eeuw, maar neemt binnen de grote groep schilderijen die in navolging van Bosch zijn gemaakt een bijzondere positie in vanwege de monumentaliteit, de kwaliteit en de creativiteit van de schildering. Het schilderij bleef voordien steeds in privébezit en was daarom weinig bekend en al zeer lang niet meer bestudeerd of onderzocht. Het Ergoedfonds maakte het mogelijk dat een kritische studie en onderzoek kon gebeuren. Die opdracht werd toevertrouwd aan Prof. A.M. Koldeweij van de Radboud Universiteit in Nijmegen en M. Ilsink van het Bosch Research and Conservation Project te 's-Hertogenbosch. Het resultaat daarvan werd in deze mooi geïllustreerde publicatie vastgelegd. Het situeert de Kruisdraging duidelijk in de navolging van Bosch, maakt de bronnen en betekenis ervan duidelijk, en maakt tegelijk komaf met de oude toeschrijving aan Jan Mandijn.‎

‎Summary One of the most important developments in the history of science from the early seventeenth until the late eighteenth century was the foundation of institutions for collaborative research and the publication of knowledge, such as the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome (1603), the Royal Society in London (1660), the Académie Royale des Sciences in Paris (1666), and the Scientific Academy of St Petersburg (1725). Within these institutions, knowledge was not only acquired and disseminated orally and textually, but also visually. From drawings, which circulated in society meetings to the printed plates in their published books, images across all media were vital to the developing practices of early modern science. Images and Institutions provides the first broad-range consideration of the use of images and visual practices within these knowledge-producing institutions from a comparative perspective. Spanning two hundred years, fifteen institutions, and large parts of Europe and America, the articles in this volume reveal the widespread importance of images and visual practices in the early days of collaborative science. Collectively these essays show that early modern scientific institutions in different regions used very similar visual strategies, relying on images in the conduct and communication of their work.
