Summary Writing Holiness contributes to exciting new critical conversations in the study of medieval hagiography in Western Christianity. Recent years have seen innovative approaches to the literatures of sanctity through emergent theoretical discourses, such as disability studies and trans theory. At the same time, traditional methodologies such as manuscript studies and reception history continue to generate new perspectives on the production, circulation, and reception of the sacred textual canon. Through ten unique contributions that draw from both new and established theories and methodologies, this volume charts the development, movement, and reception of Christian hagiographic texts in localities ranging from the Iberian Peninsula to the Scandinavian Archipelago from the early to the late Middle Ages. Each chapter traces hagiographic development over generic, temporal, cultural, and linguistic boundaries, and considers the broader contours of the sacred imaginary that come into view as a result of such critically intersectional inquiry. Initiating readers in the fascinating and complex history of witchcraft, from the goddess mythologies of ancient cultures to the contemporary embrace of the craft by modern artists and activists, this expansive tome conjures up a breathtaking overview of an age-old tradition. Rooted in legend, folklore, and myth, the archetype of the witch has evolved from the tales of Odysseus and Circe, the Celtic seductress Cerridwen, and the myth of Hecate, fierce ruler of the moonlit night. In Witchcraft we survey her many incarnations since, as she shape-shifts through the centuries, alternately transforming into mother, nymph, and crone-seductress and destroyer. Edited by Jessica Hundley, and co-edited by author, scholar, and practitioner Pam Grossman, this enthralling visual chronicle is the first of its kind, a deep dive into the complex symbologies behind witchcraft traditions, as explored through the history of art itself. The witch has played muse to great artists throughout time, from the dark seductions of Francisco Jose de Goya and Albrecht Durer to the elegant paean to the magickal feminine as re-imagined by the Surrealist circle of Remedios Varo, Leonora Carrington, and Leonor Fini. The witch has spellbound through folktales and dramatic literature as well, from the poison apples of The Brothers Grimm, to the Weird Sisters gathered at their black cauldron in Shakespeare's Macbeth, to L. Frank Baum's iconic Wicked Witch of the West, cackling over the fate of Dorothy. Throughout this entrancing visual voyage, we'll also bear witness to the witch as she endures persecution and evolves into empowerment, a contemporary symbol of bold defiance and potent nonconformity. Featuring enlightening essays by modern practitioners like Kristen J. Sollee and Judika Illes, as well interviews with authors and scholars such as Madeline Miller and Juliet Diaz, Witchcraft includes a vast range of cultural traditions that embrace magick as spiritual exploration and creative catharsis. About the series The Library of Esoterica explores how centuries of artists have given form to mysticism, translating the arcane and the obscure into enduring, visionary works of art. Each subject is showcased through both modern and archival imagery culled from private collectors, libraries, and museums around the globe. The result forms an inclusive visual history, a study of our primal pull to dream and nightmare, and the creative ways we strive to connect to the divine.

Summary This collection of essays focuses on a crucial aspect of late antique thought and literature that has hitherto largely been neglected: its self-reflexivity, i.e. its unprecedented ability to make language and literature into its main and often its only subject matter. Adopting a variety of perspectives and methodologies, the essays included in this volume approach the notion of self-reflexivity in two main ways. On the one hand (literature as a reflection of literature), it implies a self-conscious reflection of preceding literary models, which are creatively mirrored in new but intrinsically 'derivative' works of art, taking the form of remakes, parodies, homages, commentaries, retellings, centos, paraphrases, allegorizations, and more or less free 're-enactments'. On the other hand (literature as reflection on literature), the term also implies a self-questioning reflection on the literary work and the very concepts of language and literature, thus referring to its own artificiality or contrivance while opening up all sorts of theoretical discussions of the mechanisms, the conventions, and even the relevance of linguistic and literary representation. The present work, starting volume of the new Series Ibero-Caucasica, contains a complete edition of the Old Georgian texts in Asomtavruli script that are preserved in the lower layer of the famous palimpsest Codex Vindobonensis georgicus no. 2 of the Austrian National Library, Vienna. Based on a thorough analysis with the spectral imaging method provided by the MuSiS imaging system, more than 95% of the original content has been deciphered and restored. Of the 13 original manuscripts written in Asomtavruli script, six pertain to the so-called "Khanmeti" period of the Old Georgian tradition extending from the beginning of Georgian literacy in the 5th roughly to the 8th century A.D. The Khanmeti texts range from fragments of early translations of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke), parts of the Old Testament (Deuteronomy, Joshua, Judges, Esdras), and the Protevangelium of James to legends of Saints (Cyprianus and Justina, Christina). The post-Khanmeti texts (dating roughly from the 9th-10th centuries) comprise fragments of a Lectionary (lectures from Exodus, Isaiah, the Gospel and the 3rd letter of John, and Acts of Apostles), Old Testament texts (I and II Chronicles), and several homiletic texts (Epiphanius of Cyprus on Measures and Weights, Gregor of Nyssa on the Build of Man a.o.). In the edition, all texts are represented both in a diplomatic transliteration (in Asomtavruli script) and a plain transcription (in modern Mkhedruli script), together with digitally enhanced images of the pages concerned. Additionally, the text passages are contrasted line by line with the most relevant parallels (Old Georgian, Greek, Armenian, Syriac, Latin). The contents of the texts are summarized in several consolidated indexes. Languages : English.
