‎Na WO II wil de kunstenaar zich bevrijden van welk juk dan ook. Creatieve en artistieke vrijheid is het hoogste goed. Die houding resulteert in een grote verscheidenheid van materialen, thema's en stijlen. Soms figuratief, dan weer abstract, zwaar beladen of juist heel licht, het werk van de toenmalige kunstenaars is een reactie op de samenleving of een uiting van persoonlijke gevoelens. Hoe dan ook, na jaren van nazikunst keert het experiment in volle glorie terug. Die nieuwe trend ontgaat Lode Craeybeckx en Walther Vanbeselaere niet. In 1950 bezoeken ze samen de Bi nnale van Veneti . Als burgemeester van Antwerpen wil Craeybeckx werken aankopen voor het Middelheimmuseum, dat in 1951 zijn deuren opent. Vanbeselaere zou graag, in navolging van andere Europese musea, hedendaagse kunst presenteren in het KMSKA, waar hij hoofdconservator is. De Bi nnale van Veneti wijst Craeybeckx en Vanbeselaere de weg voor beide museumcollecties. Vanaf het openingsjaar van het Middelheimmuseum worden in het park Bi nnales georganiseerd, waar het KMSKA mettertijd een hele reeks sculpturen van klein formaat verwerft. In Recall Sculpture staan deze kleinsculpturen uit de jaren 1950 tot 1970 centraal. Werken die de voorbode zijn van de huidige hedendaagse kunst. De sculpturen van Consagra, Pomodoro, Scha r, Heiliger, Marini en vele anderen konden geen beter onderkomen vinden dan in het Middelheimmuseum. ‎Nel Aerts (b. 1987) moves in a freely, intuitive way between different media as painting, drawing, collage, performance and sculpture. Since a few years she focuses more often on the portrait-genre, which she visualises on paper or on wooden panels, with careful attention to the different qualities of each material. As such, she is creating a large collection (family almost) of posing subjects caught between abstract patterns and hard-edged figuration. The figures she portraits refer to both popular culture and her direct, everyday surroundings. The self-portraits are tragicomic in the sense of the contrasts they evoke. Alternately they are desperate or funny, extra- or introverted, thought- or playful carved from wood or originated as a collage, but they are always introspective and self-relativistic. In Hundred Zundert, ?Nel Aerts evokes a visual rendezvous with Vincent van Gogh and sets the tone for the near one hundred drawings that would be made during her three-month residency at the Van Gogh House in Zundert. Rather than ?following in the footsteps of Van Gogh?, Aerts is interested in examining the mud and earth around them by (literally) placing herself in the environment of Van Gogh?s youth. The resulting work is characterised by a deceptive interplay between formal simplicity and playfulness which belies a substantial complexity. (?) ‎The Ghent Altarpiece by Hubert and Jan van Eyck has always attracted both admiration and curiosity. Following the conservation of the paintings of the closed polyptych, it was the turn of those from the lower register of the open altarpiece ? including the famous Adoration of the Lamb ? to undergo a major research and conservation campaign by the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (KIK-IRPA, Brussels) between 2016 and 2020. The findings reflect those for the closed altarpiece: large areas of the panels were covered with overpaints, the vast majority dating from the 16th century. Their removal allows the Van Eycks brothers? paintings to be truly appreciated again. The three years that the conservators spent working on the panels enabled them to examine the paintings down to the smallest details. Interdisciplinary collaboration with laboratory scientists, art historians and imaging experts led to a series of discoveries ? some anticipated in light of earlier research, others unexpected. The authenticity of the quatrain stating that Hubert had begun the work, that his brother Jan completed it and that it was presented in 1432, has been firmly established for some years now. New hypotheses are proposed here regarding the division of labour between the two Van Eyck brothers. The contribution of Hubert, who died in 1426, can finally be seen more clearly and is far from negligible. But the removal of overpaints has revealed non-Eyckian interventions too...‎
