‎Summary This study interrogates press caricatures and cartoons, staged revue and opera parodies to reveal the role they play within the Parisian theatrical, social and cultural sphere. From the beginnings of Wagner reception in Paris, through the heyday of opra-bouffe in the hands of that comic genius Herv, to the international operatic repertoire played on Parisian stages in the 1890s especially works by Verdi and Wagner performed during an increasingly tense nationalist climate alongside those by Massenet, Reyer and Saint-Sans this book examines the workings of parody which draws on opera for its subject material, its appeal, and for whom. Parodys repetition of dramatic and musical conventions is compounded by the abundance of revue shows on Parisian stages, by prolific authors such as Clairville, which deftly used well-known opera and operetta repertoire alongside the scie that popular tune given new words countless times over to create new yet familiar theatrical experiences. Indeed, by the 1890s, the words and musics of Faust, Carmen and Guillaume Tell in particular, held resonant value to signify the operatic. Aside from political caricature in which the figure of Wagner became embroiled, the ways in which parody brings together the high and the low to mock cultural norms, to neutralise alterity or innovation and refocus commentary onto internal, local, conventional and legitimised cultural products and debates becomes apparent. Opera and Parody in Paris, 18601900 thus uncovers a huge amount of primary and hitherto unpublished sources in an analysis of highly appealing intermedial materials that dominated Parisian print and stage culture in the late-nineteenth century. Manuscrit relié (285x200mm) pleine basane de l'époque, dos à 5 nerfs avec pièce de titre doré, tranches mouchetées. 2fbnc, 1f titre, 294 pages manuscrites à l'encre noire, 2fbnc. Manuscrit de l'époque paginé en haut à droite et à gauche, non signé, 25 lignes par page. Inclut 3 cours bien distincts de l'astronome et ingénieur montpelliérain Jean de Clapiès (1670-1740) : Traité de trigonométrie rectiligne (p1 à p126), Traité du Nivellement (p127 à p185), Traité de méchanique (p186 à p294). Co-fondateur -avec Jean Astruc, Jean de Plantade et François Xavier Bon- de la Société Royale des Sciences de Montpellier en 1706, Clapiès est nommé professeur de mathématiques en 1718 et devient correspondant de l'Académie des Sciences de Paris. La Société à laquelle appartient Clapiès est divisée en 5 classes : Mathématiques, Anatomie, Chimie, Botanique et Physique et se situe en deuxième position après celle de Paris. Chaque année un mémoire est envoyé à l'Académie Royale des Sciences de Paris pour publication, le premier qui parut en 1707 fut celui de Jean de Clapiès, chacun de ces travaux (de 15 pages environ) étant accompagné de planches et de figures. Montpellier fut au XVIIIè siècle un foyer de recherche scientifique très intense, auquel participa le célèbre savant Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832). Alors que le traité initial du manuscrit retourne de la trigonométrie rectiligne, on peut observer que ce fut Jean de Clapiès qui le premier, appliqua cette discipline à la construction graphique des cadrans solaires. L'objet du second traité porte sur le nivellement, science ayant pour objet de déterminer de combien un point est plus près ou plus éloigné du centre de la terre (Puissant). Le traité de mécanique, dont la caractéristique principale est l'étude des forces qui interagissent sur des corps ou des masses, prend pour objets d'analyse ceux du levier, du plan incliné et de la poulie. Le manuscrit est agrémenté d'une centaine de figures dessinées à la plume. Il se compose d'une suite de problèmes, corollaires, suppositions, démonstrations et tableaux. Écriture tout à fait lisible à l'encre noire. Plats usagés avec des manques, dos assez bien conservé, intérieur en parfait état. ‎
