Published in conjunction with a combined exhibition of work by Micha l Borremans and Mark Manders at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, this volume documents what turned out to be an remarkable encounter between these two European artists. The delicate experiment of a double show like this one forces interference and tension between two distinct bodies of work, with the work of one artist providing the framework for the other, and vice versa. Nevertheless, it is an exemplary show in which a kind of choreography between Borremans, a painter, and Manders, a sculptor and installation architect, emerges through a sombre colours and formal contrasts.

Summary If dance on the London stage can be said to have had a 'golden age', it might be thought to be the years between 1760 and 1830. The changes included the arrival on the London stage of ballet d'action, and the appearance of Vestris and Noverre. Dance in the theatre and the opera house continued to be essential to the financial success of any season, and it was a ubiquitous element in the London theatrical season both in dramatic works and as entr'acte pieces. These years also saw important changes that affected theatrical dance and thus public perceptions of celebrity dancers. Despite this, and in comparison with other performers, far fewer portraits of dancers were produced. This can be explained in part by a visual culture that privileged a particularly national view of celebrity. As one of the contributors argues in this volume, 'The rhetoric of a "British school of art" contributed to marginalizing foreign singers and dancers on the London stage, as well as other immigrant artisans who had a major role to play in the economics of eighteenth-century London leisure life.' Through the examination of a series of major dancers, this volume examines the way in which the images created represented a dancer's image, which was then often exploited through the medium of print. The images discussed in the volume include formal and informal portraits, portraits in character, prints, and caricatures. TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface I. Summary The Cistercian abbeys of northern England provide some of the finest monastic remains in all of Europe, and much has been written on their twelfth- and thirteenth-century architecture. The present study is the first in-depth analysis of the art and architecture of these northern houses and nunneries in the late Middle Ages, and questions many long-held opinions about the Order's perceived decline during the period c.1300-1540. Extensive building works were conducted between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries at well-known abbeys such as Byland, Fountains, Kirkstall, and Rievaulx, and also at lesser-known houses including Calder and Holm Cultram, and at many convents of Cistercian nuns. This study examines the motives of Cistercian patrons and the extent to which the Order continued to enjoy the benefaction of lay society. Featuring over a hundred illustrations and eight colour plates, this book demonstrates that the Cistercians remained at the forefront of late medieval artistic developments, and also shows how the Order expressed its identity in its visual and material cultures until the end of the Middle Ages. Summary The sound image of Otherness has been a significant source of inspiration for Western music, especially since the late eighteenth century. Encounters with the racial and geographical Other fomented interest in unfamiliar musical traditions, which informed exotic projections by Western composers. This volume explores aspects of musical exoticism and its staging during the long nineteenth century, with a special focus on the Mediterranean. This diverse and yet historically interconnected region was arguably the heart of the exotic enterprise during this period. The intersection of exoticism, nationalism and empire is considered, with a special focus on the situation of Spain as both source of local colour and purveyor of musical exoticism. The essays in this volume explore elements of exoticism across a range of musical styles: from song to opera and the popular musical stage, and from instrumental to symphonic works. The analysis of this corpus also involves the examination of musical culture in dialogue with literature and figurative arts. While many of the essays focus on constructions of exoticism in individual works, several essays focus on repertories of musical exoticism and their coverage in musicological literature. Summary Mary of Burgundy (r. 1477-1482) occupies an important place in the history of late medieval and early modern Europe, yet her life and principate have received relatively little scholarly attention. They are, however, key to the history both of the Low Countries and of Europe, since her marriage to Maximilian of Austria united the Habsburgs with the Valois-Burgundy dynasty, giving them vast territories on the borders of France. In this book, some of the best specialists in the field contribute to a better understanding of Mary's principate, its features, and its long-term perception. In the first part, the authors address the issue of Mary's contested legitimacy as a late medieval female ruler: law, literature, visual arts and theatrical representations are examined as means of communication, strengthening or weakening her authority. In the second part, the authors examine some of Mary's governmental tools and the agents behind them. Finally, the last part questions the ways in which Mary's power and her principate have been represented and reinterpreted in subsequent eras, often with political or social intent, beginning with Maximilian's long regency and reign immediately after her death, right up to modern-day Belgium. Summary This book explores the legend of Adam's Contract with Satan that was made after the expulsion from the Garden of Eden. This legend was current in the Eastern Orthodox churches of SE Europe as well as in the Caucasus. Unknown forms of the legend have been found in two traditions, the Romanian and the Armenian, and are investigated here. Notably this legend has found its way into folk stories and sometimes into folk music, showing how widely it was accepted and distributed. This legend also inspired images in both traditions. In Romania the most striking illustrations are to be found in Bukovina province, in frescos on the famous painted churches of that region, as well as in manuscripts. In Armenia features of this story are incorporated into the iconography of the Baptism of Christ in the River Jordan. Summary Patrick Zutshi is a leading authority on the later medieval Western Church and papacy and internationally recognised as an expert in papal diplomatic and the Avignon Curia. This volume brings together essays by over twenty of Patrick's colleagues and friends, all distinguished scholars in medieval history, to celebrate his 70th birthday. The volume reflects both Patrick's wide scholarly interests, ranging from the administration of the papal curia to intellectual and legal history and the mendicant orders, and his extensive network of colleagues and collaborators in different countries, including Germany, Italy, Ireland, Switzerland, Finland, Australia, USA, and UK. This collection of essays also engages with important themes in later medieval history of wide interest to university students, their teachers, and other researchers in the field, comprising: Mendicants and the Religious Life; University and Intellectual History; Bishops and Secular Clergy; and the Papal Curia between Avignon and Rome. All the essays draw on original research, reflecting Patrick's own research and editing of manuscript and archival sources. TABLE OF CONTENTS I. Summary Nineteenth- and early twentieth-century advertisements for pianos, pianists, merchants, music publishers and, above all, for domestic purchases are full of images employed for commercial rather than cultural purposes. This volume examines the commercial characters and significances of how pianos were pictured between the early days of 'modern' marketing to today. During the early 1920s, piano sales peaked in the United States; nevertheless, pianos have continued to be sold even as radios, record players, television sets and electric keyboards increasingly replace them as must-have sources of entertainment and improvement. The market for player pianos, although comparatively short-lived, also provided manufacturers and retailers with opportunities to depict pianos and pictures. masterwork of Danish architect and furniture designer Arne Jacobsen in the centre of Copenhagen, on the sixth floor of the Royal Hotel, a single room preserves a microcosm of the definitive masterwork of Danish architect and furniture designer Arne Jacobsen (1902-71). Room 606 is the last surviving interior of the SAS House: an unparalleled example of modern architecture and design, completed in 1960. Jacobsen was one of the outstanding architects of the twentieth century, throughout his career, creating complete settings for daily life and dissolving the boundaries between architecture, interior and industrial design. The chapters are organized thematically: each consists of three sections that together look at Room 606 as a microcosm of the SAS House, reconstruct the original building, and trace the connections between Jacobsen's masterpiece and his other works - from whole buildings to household objects.

Summary Founded in 1132, Fountains Abbey became the wealthiest English Cistercian monastery - yet relatively little analysis has been made of its surviving records to investigate how its wealth was controlled and sustained. This book deals with this secular aspect of the religious community at Fountains, investigating in particular the way in which prosaic business records were compiled and redacted. It traces the transmission of data from original charters through successive versions of cartularies, and in the process establishes the existence of a previously unknown manuscript. It also reveals how abbots in the fifteenth century interacted with and adapted the records in their care. In this process, two quite different aspects of monastic life are uncovered. First, it sheds new light on the history of Fountains Abbey through the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, amongst other things how it responded to the turmoil of the Black Death, and discloses for the first time the allegiance of one abbot to the Lancastrian cause during the Wars of the Roses. Second, it reveals the worldly skills shown by the community of Fountains that were successfully applied to exploit the monastery's large landholdings across Yorkshire, mainly through wool and agricultural production, but also through fisheries, tanning, mining, and metalworking. The economic success of these activities enabled the abbey to become a prosperous institution which rivalled the wealth of the aristocracy. This book addresses recordkeeping and archival memory at one, Cistercian, monastery - albeit a well-endowed and prosperous one - in the north of England. However, its treatment of archival sources could be extended to other houses in different geographical locations and different orders, to enable comparisons between monasteries dealing with economic change and social and political upheaval in the later Middle Ages. The central theme of Rubens?s paintings is the human figure, often represented nude or partially clothed and involved in dramatic action. As a history painter, Rubens?s acclaimed skill in rendering the human body whether male or female, lean or fleshy, mature in years or young, animated or lifeless, vigorous or diseased, heroic or cowering, sensuous or decrepit, idealised or blemished and imperfect enabled him to vie with the greatest artists ever known, while creating increasing demand for his work among Europe?s intellectual, cultural, religious and political lite. His mastery in depicting human figures and their dynamic movements suggests that he followed the example of Leonardo da Vinci (1452?1519), Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475?1564) and other Italian artists he admired, who made extensive studies of human anatomy. As pointed out by two recent perceptive scholars, however, the robust, muscular male nudes in action who appear in so many of Rubens?s narrative paintings are often anatomically inaccurate. Moreover, and as will become clear in this volume, Rubens?s approach to anatomical study was not closely similar to that of any of his forbears. In many respects his ways of working are comparable to those of Michelangelo, who used the knowledge he acquired through dissection not to pursue verisimilitude but to invent the anatomy of his figures according to his own idea of physical beauty, strength and expression. Yet unlike Italian Renaissance artists such as Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Alessandro Allori (1535?1607), Rubens did not perform or witness dissections and seems to have rarely studied from the live nude model. What, then, was the nature and extent of Rubens?s study of human anatomy? The present volume will offer an answer to that question, while also establishing when and where most of his anatomical works were made and reassessing the issue of their intended purpose.

The posthumous release of the last book that Michael Wolf himself worked on, published to mark the fifth anniversary of his death Award-winning German photographer Michael Wolf (1954?2019) grew up in Canada, Europe and the United States. In 1994, Wolf moved to Hong Kong, where he worked for eight years as a contract photographer for Stern Magazine. The core of Wolf?s work consisted of capturing life in megacities. Many of his projects depict the architecture and popular culture of metropolises, and Hong Kong Whispers is no exception. This book contains a stunning series of photos showing the vibrant global city of Hong Kong. Wolf?s photographs are displayed in dialogue with the acerbic and ambiguous drawings of Arpa s Du Bois ( 1973). Based on intense engagement with Wolf?s series of images, she reflects on unnoticed moments and events that characterise life in the metropolis. The visual exchange between photographs and drawings took shape during Du Bois?s stay of several weeks in Hong Kong (2014), during which the two artists observed the city both together and individually.

Ambiguity and contradiction are the twin hallmarks of the paintings, drawings and films of Micha l Borremans (b. 1963). He deploys his technical virtuosity to create apparently familiar scenes, which on closer inspection have an unsettling effect. He combines black humour, violence, absurdism and beauty to produce images that are strange and alienating, in which the subject seems to be situated in an undefined time and space. This catalogue provides an overview of Micha l Borremans' work since 2013. The majority of the works have never been published before. The book focuses on the different series of paintings he has exhibited over recent years: 'Black Mould', 'Fire From the Sun' and 'Coloured Cones'. Working in series is a recent development in Borremans' oeuvre. Micha l Borremans has staged solo exhibitions in a variety of venues, including Galerie Rudolfinum in Prague, CAC M laga, Dallas Museum of Art, Tel Aviv Museum of Art, BOZAR in Brussels, Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo, The Cleveland Museum of Art, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, De Appel in Amsterdam and Parasol Unit in London.

Summary This volume investigates the origins of one of the most important notions of contemporary society: privacy. Based on case studies from the early modern Low Countries, privacy is tackled from various historical perspectives: social and cultural history, and the history of art and architecture. The Dutch Republic is well known for its financial success, which went hand in hand with the development of a distinguished bourgeois culture and religious toleration. The accumulation of wealth among the urban population led to changes in various spheres, from daily life to art. Privacy, as a concept, started to develop in this period. Indeed, new ideas about housing with the invention of corridors, separate rooms that could be locked, and the separation of the 'common' and the 'private' space, all illustrate the growing importance of privacy in this geographical area. This volume traces perspectives on early modern privacy and private life based on primary sources in several domains: letters, diaries, and poems; genre painting in art; communal life as illustrated by the Jewish community; and finally, the homes of the Dutch elite. The essays in this volume make a key contribution to the emergence of early modern privacy studies as a research field, and to the ongoing discussion of privacy in the Low Countries. Equally, these case studies can serve as models for the analysis of privacy in other European contexts. TABLE OF CONTENTS The Low Countries, Private Life, and Privacy ?
