Zijn persoonlijke project Water in de Sahel won in 1986 de Eugene Smith-prijs en benadrukte zijn toewijding om de menselijke ervaring in moeilijke omstandigheden vast te leggen. Als medeoprichter van Agence VU documenteerde Vink wereldwijd vluchtelingenkampen. Dat liet hem toe om in 1997 volwaardig lid te worden bij Magnum Photos, wat hij zou blijven tot en met 2017. Zijn serie Peuples d?En Haut toont de veerkrachten culturele identiteit van berggemeenschappen, zoals de Mam in Guatemala en de Hmong in Laos. Na jaren van reizen vestigde Vink zich in 2000 in Cambodja, wat hem in staat stelde om zich dieper in een cultuur te verdiepen.
