Teniers (1610-1690) was een van de grootste schilder van zijn tijd. Alle thema's van de genreschilderkunst komen bij hem aan bod: taferelen met boeren en burgers, galante en soldateske scènes met veelal moraliserende inslag, religieuze voorstelllingen en portretten.‎

‎Tentoonstellingscatalogus Cultureel Centrum Antoon Spinoy [Mechelen]] Schilderen was voor de Gentse kunstenaar Jos Trotteyn (1910-2002) zijn manier om uitdrukking te geven aan een onuitputtelijke stroom van uiterst gevarieerde gedachten. Het kenmerkende palet van deze verborgen parel bevat een veelheid aan subtiele tinten, van Indisch geel en oker over karmijnrood en cyaanblauw tot sienna. Dank zij het verfijnde aanwenden van deze kleurenschakeringen kon Jos Trotteyn zich uiten op uiteenlopende manieren: van sobere natuurimpressies tot hallucinante droombeelden, zodat het onmogelijk is om Jos Trotteyn in een woord te beschrijven. De subtiele beeldtaal die Jos Trotteyn ontwikkelde, is schatplichtig aan zowel de Vlaamse Primitieven als aan het surrealisme. Het was er deze schilder niet om te doen een enkel genre te bestrijken en daarmee naam te maken. ‎Summary This volume presents the proceedings of the conference Materiality and Conversion: The Role of Material and Visual Cultures in the Christianization of the Latin West organized by the Centre for Early Medieval Studies in 2020. Its contributions thus focus on the Christianization of the Roman Empire between the fourth and sixth centuries. The studies examine the religious change through the ?material turn? approach, building on the material and sensorial dimension of Christian conversion and especially the baptismal rite as one of the key components of the process. Zijn studie aan het Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten in Antwerpen is van blijvende invloed geweest, meer dan de periode in Parijs waarin hij probeerde zijn weg te vinden in de toegepaste kunsten. Terug in Nederland kwam de nadruk te liggen op figuratief, vrij werk naar verschillende thema's als landschappen, figuurstukken en portretten. In zijn beeldhouwwerk, dat afzonderlijk wordt besproken, valt de nadruk op monumentale figuratieve beelden, bijvoorbeeld van Multatuli en Thorbecke.
