‎Vincent van Gogh kwam tijdens zijn Nuenense periode (december 1883 tot november 1885) vaak in het toen nog knusse Eindhoven, waar hij vrienden, kennissen en leerlingen had. Auteur Jack van Hoek heeft geprobeerd zo veel mogelijk informatie te achterhalen over de personen met wie Van Gogh toen omging. Dit geeft niet alleen inzicht in het verrassend drukke sociale leven van de schilder, maar ook in diens experimenten met lithografie en fotografie voor het reproduceren van zijn werk. Daarnaast maakt de lezer kennis met een aantal kleurrijke inwoners van het zich op dat moment snel ontwikkelende industri le stadje Eindhoven. En ook wordt uitgebreid ingegaan op de tot standkoming van de litho De Aardappleters die Van Gogh op 16 april 1885 bij de Eindhovense drukkerij Gestel maakte. En d t ging niet zonder slag of stoo, zo is te lezen. Het boek is het resultaat van ruim 35 jaar research door de auteur. Zowel op locatie als in archieven en door het navraag doen bij de nabestaanden.‎
