Plus de cent quarante manuscrits conservent encore aujourd'hui tout ou partie du Lancelot-Graal, ce qui t moigne d'un succ s jamais d menti du XIIIe au XVe si cle et d'un prestige dont de nombreux princes et souverains, d'Henri IV de Luxembourg Jean de Berry et Jacques d'Armagnac, ont voulu se parer. Pourtant, les manuscrits r unissant toutes les branches du cycle sont relativement peu nombreux. Cette tude iconographique se concentre sur les cinq manuscrits les plus anciens comprenant l'int gralit du Lancelot-Graal, produits entre la fin du XIIIe et le d but du XIVe si cle : Bonn, ULB, S 526 ; Paris, BnF, fr. 110 et fr. 344 ; Londres, BL, Add. 10292-294 et un volume actuellement dispers entre plusieurs collections (l'ex-Amsterdam, BPH, ms 1, Manchester, Rylands, ms Fr. 1, et Oxford, Bodleian, Douce 215). Le cycle iconographique de BnF, fr. 344, reproduit dans son int gralit , fait l'objet d'un commentaire syst matique. Ce manuscrit d'origine messine ou verdunoise, que l'on peut rapprocher sur le plan stylistique des tr sors enlumin s de Renaut de Bar, v que de Metz entre 1302 et 1313, pr sente plus de trois cents miniatures et initiales histori es. C'est un t moin de l'importance du d veloppement de l'illustration des ouvrages de type profane en langue vernaculaire partir de la fin du XIIe si cle. ‎Summary Isaac Argyros was a leading astronomer and theologian of the late 14th century, who spent most of his life at the Chora monastery in Constantinople. Besides several works on astronomy, he wrote a number of treatises against the Palamites in the tradition of his teacher and mentor Nicephorus Gregoras: (1.) De quattuor modis participationis Dei; (2.) De lumine Transfigurationis ad Gedeonem Zographum; and (3.) Solutio quaestionis cuiusdam Palamiticae. Former emperor John Cantacuzenus composed a lenghty treatise against Argyrus (Contra Argyrum), in which he attacks the fact that Argyros and his followers deny three things: that the seven spirits referred to by Isaiah are uncreated; that the grace of God is uncreated; and that men receive gifts of God in an immediate manner. Together, the four texts in this edition shed light on an interesting chapter in the palamite controversy.‎

Très bel exemplaire, parfaitement établi. * Ce recueil rassemble dans leur succession presque immédiate les quatre textes essentiels de la querelle qui opposa Isaac Cattier à Nicolas Papin sur la poudre de sympathie. Il permet de suivre la controverse depuis la dissertation latine de Papin, parue une première fois en 1647 et réimprimée ici en 1650, jusqu'aux deux répliques françaises échangées l'année suivante. La poudre de sympathie appartenait à la tradition paracelsienne de l'onguent armaire. Elle ne devait pas être appliquée directement sur la plaie, mais sur l'arme qui l'avait produite ou sur un linge imprégné du sang du blessé. La blessure, simplement nettoyée et protégée, était supposée guérir à distance par l'effet d'une correspondance invisible entre le corps, le sang et l'objet traité. L'affrontement ne portait donc pas seulement sur l'efficacité d'un remède. Il engageait la possibilité même d'une action à distance. Papin défendait l'existence d'une sympathie naturelle capable de relier des corps séparés. Cattier soumettait au contraire cette causalité aux exigences de la raison médicale et à l'adage selon lequel aucun agent ne peut agir là où il n'est pas. À travers la poudre se trouvaient ainsi discutées les frontières entre médecine, magnétisme, philosophie naturelle et magie. Le désaccord fut encore compliqué par un malentendu bibliographique. Papin crut reconnaître dans le discours de Cattier une réfutation directe de sa dissertation. Dans sa Response de 1651, Cattier protesta qu'il n'avait pas eu connaissance du texte de son adversaire lorsqu'il avait composé son premier traité. Le présent volume réunit précisément les pièces de ce dialogue contrarié : la thèse, l'objection, la défense et la réponse à la défense. Cette polémique française précède de plusieurs années le discours par lequel le chevalier anglais Kenelm Digby allait donner à la poudre de sympathie sa plus grande célébrité européenne. Prononcée devant une assemblée savante à Montpellier en 1657, puis publiée en 1658, son intervention reprenait le même problème de la guérison à distance et cherchait à l'expliquer par les mouvements de particules et les mécanismes invisibles de la nature. Le débat Cattier-Papin montre que cette matière agitait déjà les médecins français avant que Digby ne lui confère l'éclat d'une démonstration mondaine. ‎Summary In 1239 the Christian convert Nicholas Donin submitted thirty-five articles to Pope Gregory IX that decried the indecency, blasphemy, and heresy in the Talmud. As a result, the pope triggered a campaign across Europe that gave rise to a trial of the Talmud in Paris in 1240. The Latin translation of the Talmud - namely, the 1245 Extractiones de Talmud and later versions such as the Excerptum de Talmud - emerged from these events. This volume offers the first critical edition, along with an English translation, of the Excerptum de Talmud. Drawing on the substantial translation of the Babylonian Talmud known as the Extractiones de Talmud (Paris, 1245), the Excerptum provided a selection of passages from the Talmud which its compiler organized according to controversial topics. This book consists of two principal parts. The first contains a study of the Excerptum, its textual source (the Extractiones de Talmud), and an overview of the historical background which prompted this translation. The second part consists of an edition and translation of the text, as well as an edition of the passages from the Extractiones which served as the basis for the Excerptum.
