Reliure à emblème (Athéna - ou vertu?- avec ses attributs lisant un livre sous un arbre, sur son écu : une épée surmontée de la croix de Malte, le tout flanqué de 4 étoiles) et devise Vicit Vim Virtus frappé sur les plats. ‎This two-volume catalogue brings together some of the finest natural history drawings assembled by Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588?1657) and his younger brother Carlo Antonio (1606?89) in Rome over the course of the seventeenth century. Included are 251 coloured drawings of fauna and 63 of precious stones, marbles, fossils, exotic fruits and seeds and other natural curiosities. Cassiano had a particular interest in ornithology, and birds are thus the best-represented animals in this group, with more than 200 drawings of both native and exotic species. Many were the models for the plates in a book on ornithology, the Uccelliera, which Cassiano co-authored and presented to the Accademia dei Lincei on his election to that scientific society in 1622. Several others were executed to accompany discourses written by Cassiano on individual birds, often following dissection of those birds. Other drawings of animals here include mammals, fishes, crustaceans and molluscs. The drawings of mineral specimens and natural curiosities illustrate items typically found in the collectors? cabinets of the period: gemstones, marbles, bezoars, corals, fossils, exotic seeds and scientific instruments. Many of the specimens came from the collections of Cassiano?s contemporaries and were the focal point of scientific investigations and discussion. To catalogue such a wide range of material, a team of historians of art and science and specialists from the fields of ornithology, zoology and geology has been assembled. The introductory essays discuss Cassiano?s engagement with nature and the collecting and illustrating of fauna and other naturalia in the seventeenth century. Documentary appendices provide transcriptions and translations of key manuscript sources. Following the dispersal of a large number of the natural history drawings from the Royal Library at Windsor Castle between the two world wars, many are now in public and private collections. They constitute more than a third of the drawings catalogued here, which allows Cassiano?s surviving holdings in these fields of natural history to be studied in their entirety. Like the other volumes it is beautifully produced. The quality of the essays is excellent throughout, and the editors and authors have done an impressive job in organizing this recalcitrant and heterogeneous material, making it accessible, and lucidly explaining to what extent we can still discern traces of its original organization (?) ‎ Henri Laurens (* 18. Februar 1885 in Paris; 5. Mai 1954 ebenda) war ein franz sischer Bildhauer und Zeichner des Kubismus. Laurens absolvierte von 1899 bis 1905 zun chst eine Steinmetzlehre und widmete sich der ornamentalen Bildhauerarbeit am Bau. In seiner Freizeit fertigte er Plastiken im Stil Auguste Rodins an. 1911 schloss er sich der Gruppe der K nstler des Montparnasse an und wurde bis 1912 durch Georges Braque, mit dem er zeitlebens befreundet war, in den synthetischen Kubismus eingef hrt. 1913 partizipierte er zum ersten Mal am Salon des Ind pendants in Paris und lernte drei Jahre sp ter Juan Gris, Amedeo Modigliani und Pablo Picasso kennen, woraufhin bis 1919 Stilleben und K pfe aus ausgeschnittenen, schr g ineinandergef gten, bemalten Ebenen aus Holz und Metall"[1], zum Teil im Stil afrikanischer Stammesmasken, entstanden. Zwischen 1920 und 1930 schuf Laurens in Anlehnung an Picassos kubistische Gem lde post-kubistische Werke, die nicht mehr konstruiert, sondern modelliert sind. Ab 1930 verloren die Figuren ihren kubistischen Aufbau und gewannen unter dem Einfluss des Surrealismus eine gerundet-volumin se K rperlichkeit." Nach einem Aufenthalt am Meer im Jahre 1934 wandelte sich sein Thema hin zu amphibischen Sirenen und anderen sinnlichen Meerjungfrauen oder Musen. Ein Hauptwerk aus dieser Zeit ist die im Jahre 1952 fertiggestellte L'Amphion vor der Universit t von Caracas in Venezuela, eine auf (inklusive Sockel) 4,40 Meter H he vergr erte Version der L'Amphion von 1937. Der griechischen Sage nach f gten sich beim Mauerbau von Theben die Steine allein durch den Klang von Amphions Lyra zusammen. Diese Arbeit ist nach Laurens' eigenen Worten der Versuch einer Synthese von Musik und Architektur".In der Bronze Le matin (Der Morgen) von 1944 verarbeitete Laurens das mit der Okkupation durch die Deutschen verbundene erdr ckende Leid. So mussten viele seiner Freunde Paris verlassen und kehrten zum Teil nie wieder zur ck. Henri Laurens starb im Jahr 1954 im Alter von 69 Jahren in seiner Heimatstadt. ‎het Nieuwe boek Lier en de Nederlanden van de hand van Henri Melis, waaraan hij tien jaar gewerkt heeft. Wie eerdere publicaties van Henri Melis kent, zoals De Lierse pompen, Het geheim van Lier, De Grote Kerk en Taferelen uit het leven van een Pallieter, twijfelt niet aan zijn interesse en liefde voor de geschiedenis van zijn geboortestad Lier. Hij is niet enkel geboeid door alle historische feiten en anekdotes waarover ooit door andere auteurs gerapporteerd werd, hij wil er een extra dimensie aan toevoegen. Zonder de historische context geweld aan te doen, wil hij ze vooral visualiseren door ze te vertellen en te tekenen vanuit de film die zich in zijn creatieve geest afspeelt. De bedoeling van het werk is vooral de lezer, ook de niet historisch onderlegde, te boeien door de merkwaardige rol die Lier is zijn ruim 800-jarige geschiedenis als stad binnen de Nederlanden heeft gespeeld. De gebeurtenissen werden in korte hoofdstukken gegoten waarin alle namen, plaatsen en omstandigheden terug te vinden zijn in de geraadpleegde archieven, primaire bronnen, iconografie n, kadasterplannen e.d. uit binnen- en buitenland. Het schilderij De Lierse Furie uit 1595 trok op een bepaald ogenblik de bijzondere aandacht van Henri Melis, omdat daarop het stadsplan van Lier te zien was met 11 poorten. Vermits vandaag nog maar 1 poort overeind bleef ? de Gevangenenpoort nodigde dit uit tot een grondig onderzoek. De verschillende historische feiten kregen vorm in geanimeerde verhalen. Daarnaast werden belangrijke bijeenkomsten, feesten, ontmoetingen en zelfs een koninklijk huwelijk, tot leven gebracht in 50 kleurrijke en prachtige aquarellen. Heel wat stadspoorten ? zowel binnen- als buitenpoorten kregen vorm op basis van oude tekeningen, blootgelegde fundamenten of naar analogie met nog bestaande 14de eeuwse poorten in Vlaanderen en Nederland.‎
