A pioneering exploration of Rothko's deep and sustained engagement with the history of art While Mark Rothko (1903?1970) has long been considered a preeminent figure in 20th-century art, few publications have examined his work within the broader context of Western art, even though Rothko himself continuously sought it out as inspiration. Rothko had a profound interest in history and art history?including Greek and Roman mythology, Egyptian fables, Byzantine and early Italian gold-ground paintings, and masterworks of the Renaissance and Dutch Golden Age. He first traveled to Europe in 1950, starting in Paris and winding through Venice, Arezzo, Siena, Florence, and Rome; along the way, he admired frescoes by Fra Angelico and architecture by Michelangelo. This beautiful book examines the influence of the artist?s travels on his oeuvre. It presents Rothko?s engagement with important classical and Old Master works, highlighting older techniques and ideas that the artist may have sought to emulate. Works representative of Rothko?s entire corpus are beautifully illustrated with full-page color plates. The book also contains writings by the artist?selected for publication by his son?that document his appreciation of art history in his own words. Sabine Haag is general director, and Jasper Sharp is curator of modern and contemporary art, both at the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna. Thomas E. Crow is Rosalie Solow Professor of Modern Art at New York University?s Institute of Fine Arts. Christopher Rothko, a writer and psychologist, chairs the Board of Directors of the Rothko Chapel, Houston.

At the beginning of 2020, just as global Covid-19 restrictions were coming into force, the artist David Hockney was at his house, studio and garden in Normandy. From there, he witnessed the arrival of spring, and recorded the blossoming of the surrounding landscape on his iPad, a method of drawing he has been using for over a decade. Drawing outdoors was an antidote to the anxiety of the moment for Hockney - 'We need art, and I do think it can relieve stress,' he says. This uplifting publication - produced to accompany a major exhibition at the Royal Academy of Arts - includes 116 of the new iPad drawings and shows to full effect Hockney's singular skill in capturing the exuberance of nature. The book begins with an interview with the show's curator, Edith Devaney, in which Hockney discusses his heralding of the spring.

This first monographic publication of the work of URA Yves Malysse Kiki Verbeeck gives a unique look at the oeuvre and the architectural language of this Brussels based architectural practice. The book gives a richly illustrated overview of the most important projects that the office has realized in the past 15 years. The publication situates URA's oeuvre in a larger historical and geographical context. In an interview, the architects explain their working method, vision on architecture and frame of reference. The images by Filip Dujardin illustrate the subtle architectural quality of the buildings with a sensitive attention to space and materiality. The architecture practice URA Yves Malysse Kiki Verbeeck was founded in 2010 by Yves Malysse (* 1973) and Kiki Verbeeck (*1974). They live and work in Brussels.

Chez Gueffier | à Paris 1769 - 1770 | 12 x 20.30 cm | 4 volumes reliés
Paris, Gueffier, 1769-1770. Quatre volumes in-8.

Summary The Revelation of Jesus Christ, better known as the Apocalypse of John, or simply the Book of Revelation, has always fascinated its readers, both religious and non-religious. Its transmission and reception in a Christian context have given rise to a wide variety of interpretations and controversies. At the heart of this revelation are the enigmatic figures of a pregnant woman appearing in heaven and then fleeing into the desert, a prostitute appearing in the desert and riding a beast, and then the bride of the Lamb, as well as a great city called Babylon, Sodom, and Egypt. Cities, beast, and prostitute are usually interpreted as thinly veiled references to Rome and its empire, and in particular to the emperor Nero. However, this reading raises a number of interpretative problems concerning the relationship between these different female figures and their relation to the beast, which duplicates into a beast from the sea and a beast from the land, and concerning the city that lies beneath Babylon. Although they do not all share the exact same point of view on the Apocalypse of John and on the solutions to these interpretative problems, the contributions gathered in this volume all question the received ideas in one way or another. What they have in common is a regard for the Apocalypse of John as a text strongly rooted in the Judaism of its time, and they place great emphasis on interpreting the text through attention to its author's use of the Jewish Scriptures. Lucie Rie (1902-1995) is one of the finest modern potters of the 20th century. Born and trained in Vienna, her successful early career came to a halt in 1938 when forced to leave Austria to escape the persecution of Jewish people. In exile in London, Rie established a new workshop and over five decades created highly individual bowls, vases and tableware which continue to amaze and inspire today. With over 150 photographs and five new essays, Lucie Rie: The Adventure of Pottery celebrates an exceptional life of creative invention and experiment. With texts by Edmund de Waal, Tanya Harrod, Helen Ritchie, Eliza Spindel, Kimberley Chandler and Nigel Wood.

Summary By the later Middle Ages Valencia had become a major urban centre close to the Mediterranean and surrounded by fertile plains. From Jaume I's conquest of the city in 1238, ecclesiastical and civic institutions were founded in rapid succession and built elegant churches and palaces to reflect their permanence and prestige. From at least the time of Francesc Eiximenis (d. 1409), the city's authorities became increasingly aware of the importance of opening new public spaces within the web of narrow streets characteristic of Muslim conurbations in the interest of developing the representation of a Christian civic religion. These spaces, notably those in front of the royal palace, cathedral and Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, quickly established themselves as focal points for urban ritual, especially for the processional activity that marked the liturgical calendar and the devotional practices of confraternities and guilds. Sounds of all kinds shaped and were shaped by the urban complex and were generated by both the festive and non-festive events that, whether recurrent or exceptional, held deep significance for the inhabitants of the city. This interdisciplinary collection of fifteen essays explores the relationship between the sounds and spaces of late medieval and early modern Valencia to gain greater insight into how the city's inhabitants interpreted the soundspace in which they moved and which influenced their daily lives, creating a sense of community - albeit one full of rivalry and conflict - and resulting in a coherent Valencian identity.

Summary Presented on the occasion of Richard A. Linenthal's seventieth birthday in June 2026, this book is a tribute to his learning, his passion, his friendship, and his capacity to enthuse and inspire others. In a 50-year career as an antiquarian bookseller, first with Bernard Quaritch Ltd., then latterly under his own name, Richard has found a home for many of the most important books to have passed through the trade. Equally happy working with institutions and private collectors, Richard's enthusiasm and friendship have been central to building collections around the world. His influence and impact can be seen in libraries across the UK and the US, but also in Japan, where he was central to the development of both academic and private libraries. Among the contributors are collectors, friends, family, colleagues, librarians, curators, and scholars and the contributions are as varied as Richard's own interests, encompassing book history, the book trade, antiquities, manuscript studies, provenance research and library history. An important and exciting collection of 45 essays which contribute much to our understanding of the collecting of the written and printed word. TABLE OF CONTENTS For Richard A.
