‎Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby. - [THE FIRST OPERATING LASER]‎

‎London, Macmillan, 1960. Royal8vo. Bound in full cloth with two black leather title label to spine. In ""Nature"", Vol. 187, 1960.‎

‎First printing of this fundamental paper in the history of the laser, which described the first operating laser. The paper ""might be considered the most important per word of any of the wonderful papers in Nature over the past century"" (Garwin. A century of Nature. P. 107).""Maiman made the first laser operate on 16 may 1960 at the Hughes Research Laboratory in California, by shining a high-power flash lamp on a ruby rod with silver-coated surfaces. He promptly submitted a short report on the work (Stimulated Optical Radiation in Ruby) to the journal Physical Review Letters, but the editors turned it down."" (Ibid.). Maiman turned to Nature where the paper was better received and published on 6 August. It was turned down by Physical Review Letters because Maiman in June 1960 had submitted a paper with a similar topic (Optical and Microwave-Optical Experiments in Ruby). ""While lasers quickly caught the public imagination, perhaps for their similarity to the 'heat rays' of science fiction, practical applications took years to develop. A young physicist named Irnee D'Haenens, while working with Maiman on the ruby laser, joked that the device was 'a solution looking for a problem,' and the line lingered in the laser community for many years"" (Britannica). The development of the laser was essentially built upon the insights discovered by Albert Einstein in 1917 in his ""Zur Quantentheorie der Strahlung"". Einstein had shown theoretically that stimulated emission of electromagnetic radiation, a re-derivation of Max Planck's law of radiation, would make an atom or molecule to fall to a lower energy state and emit more waves. The development of the laser is not only of seminal importance in itself, it is also a testament to a period in which many of the achievements within theoretical physics reached in the early part of the 20th century went from being theoretical to applied. Leather along fronthinge cracking, but holding and cover not loose. Spine rubbed. All edges gilt. Engraved frontispiece. XXIX,(10),384,XX pp. and 5 folded engraved plates.‎

‎Mairan was member of the Academie Des Sciences from 1719 and he served as its secretary from 1741 to 1743. ""He was an importent and sometimes controversial figure in the scientific community of his day. Working in the decades during which Newtonian ideas were becoming known in France, Mairan incorporated some of them in his theories"" but he remained basically Cartesian."" (DSB). He made importent studies on Aurora Borealis. His work here on ice, liquids, fluids and evaporations, was inspired by his experiences of the slowness of which ice melts and that it melts faster mixed with differents salts in freezing mixtures. It incorporates details of quantitative experiments, and treats the effects of cold on many substances. In comparison with the first edition from 1717, this edition is considerably enlarged and augmented by a section on the thermometres of George Martine and it is the first illustrated edition. - Poggendorff II: p. 17 - Duveen: p. 386 - Neville II: p. 129.‎

THE FIRST is MAIRAN'S reply to Madame DU CHATELET's Institutions de physique in which she had attacked his 1728 memoir condemning the vis-viva principle. The conflict between MAIRAN and DU CHATELET was a proonged and acrimonious one, in which curiously, VOLTAIRE was to take the side of MAIRAN. The Marquise had originally been a supporter of MAIRAN and of the Newtonian-Cartesian viewpoint, but was broutht over to the Leibnizian camp. MAIRAN's view of the problem was the force of a body depends on its velocity rather than the squae of its velocity. Contrary to some, MAIRAN was aware that velocity should be treated as a vector quantity, bt his arguments in general did not provide anay special clarification to the problem". Pendant la Campagne d'Egypte, il révéla toutes ses qualités de mathématicien, ingénieur militaire et physicien. rentré en France en 1801 pour raison de santé, il mourut en 1812. Laplace's paper: pp. 274-285.‎

‎First apperance in German of these importent papers on the refraction and double refraction of light. The papers by Malus is his first two papers on the refraction of light and Laplace's paper is the memoir in which he commented Malus' paper and Huygen's refraction law. ""In 1788 Haüy found experimentally that Huygen's law was true only in certain special cases, but in 1802 Wollaston found experimental evidence for the Huygenian construction (the second Wollaston paper offered). In ´""Mémoire sur la mesure du pouvoir réfringent"" (the first paper offered) Malus showed that Wollaston's experiments were incomplete, and so the French corpuscularian physicists did not trust Wollaston's results. They thought, moreover, that Wollaston was associated with Tmomas Young and therfore with the new wave hypothesis. In this situation the Institute on January 1808 proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French ""Newtonian"" scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. By december 1808 Malus had finished his experimental investigations, which verified the Huygenian law. What remained was a theoretical deduction of the law. In January 1809, Laplace published a memoir in which he deduced Huygen's law law within the framework of Newtonian mechanics, using the principle of least action, and Malus considered this an insolence which deprived him of the priority. In 1810 Malus von the prize for his ""Théorie sur la double réfraction"", published in 1811.""(DSB IX, p. 73).‎

‎Jombert Paris 1780 1 vol. In-8 broché de 2 ff.n.ch., 202 pp. 1 f. n.ch., couverture muette papier coquille (non rogné, grandes marges).‎

‎Edition originale (Poggendorff II, 39 - Duveen, 388 - Waller, 11396).
