Ad Christianum Quartum Daniae & Septemtrionis Regem. - [SOLVING THE QUADRATURE OF THE CIRCLE - BY THE SOLE DISCIPLE OF TYCHO BRAHE]‎

‎Hafniae (i.e. Copenhagen), Henric Waldkirch, 1612. 4to. Bound in a recent half vellum with handwritten title to spine. Text browned, due to the quality of the paper. A tiny hole to the woodcut frame of the title-page and a handwritten ""4"" to the top of the title-page. A good copy. 83 pp. Title within an ornamental woodcut border, large woodcut initials, and woodcut illustrations in the text. With dedicatory letter to King Christian IV and a eulogy to the author by Casper Bartholin.‎

‎The extremely rare first edition of one of Longomontanus' most important works, namely his first publication on the squaring of the circle, a problem that occupied him for decades, until his death in 1647.The work sparked an international feud, as Longomontanus' claim to have solved the squaring of the circle provoked the British mathematician John Pell to such a degree that almost his entire time in the Netherlands (1643 till 1652) was occupied with refuting Longomonatunus' claim. Having continued to work on the quadrature of the circle ever since 1612, yet another work by Longomontanus on the problem was published in Amsterdam in 1644. The Longomontanus-Pell-affair occupied a great deal of mathematicians at the time and no-one succeeded in convincing Longomontanus that he had not solved the problem. Longomontanus is one of the most famous Danish astronomers and mathematicians. He was so closely connected to Tycho Brahe that it is difficult to separate his fame from that of Brahe, which meant that whatever his mathematical skills may actually have been, everything he published was of consequence. ""Because Severin's career was virtually determined by his unique status as the literary heir of Tycho, it is impossible to form an independent estimate of his contemporary reputation. He was highly esteemed by Tycho for his skill at manipulating observational data, and he may have played an important role in Tycho's remarkable research on the lunar theory… In addition to his astronomical interests, Severin also displayed considerable enthusiasm for pure mathematics, but with notably less success. Concerned principally with the quadrature of the circle, he believed that he had solved the problem with a precise evaluation of ""pi"" as equal to 78/43 ?(squareroot)3. The Danish astronomer Christen Sørensen Longomontanus (1562 -1647) was the sole disciple of Tycho Brahe and is primarily famous for two things: 1) his attempt at squaring the circle and the international feud that came from his claim to have done so successfully, and 2) for presenting Brahe's planetary observations for the first time and for putting them into a systematic whole - ""When Tycho died in 1601, his program for the restoration of astronomy was unfinished. The observational aspects were complete, but two important tasks remained: the selection and integration of the data into accounts of the motions of the planets, and the presentation of the results of the entire program in the form of a systematic treatise. Severin, Tycho's sole disciple, assumed the responsibility and fulfilled both tasks in his voluminous ""Astronomia Danica"" (1622). Regarded as the testament of Tycho, the work was eagerly received and quickly won a place in seventeenth-century astronomical literature. Even after the appearance of Kepler's ""Tabulae Rudolphinae"" (1627), a rival work that bore the imprimatur of Tycho, Severin's ""Astronomia Danica"" retained sufficient prestige to warrant reprinting in 1640 and 1663."" (DSB). The name Longomontanus was a Latinized form of the name of the village of Lomborg, Jutland, Denmark, where he was born. His father, a laborer called Søren, or Severin, died when Christen was eight years old. An uncle took charge of the child, and had him educated at Lemvig" but after three years sent him back to his mother, who needed his help to work the fields. She agreed that he could study during the winter months with the clergyman of the parish" this arrangement continued until 1577, when the ill-will of some of his relatives and his own desire for knowledge caused him to run away to Viborg. There he attended the grammar school, working as a labourer to pay his expenses, and in 1588 went to Copenhagen with a high reputation for learning and ability. Engaged by Tycho Brahe in 1589 as his assistant in his great astronomical observatory of Uraniborg, he rendered invaluable service for eight years. Having left the island of Hven with his master, he obtained his discharge at Copenhagen on 1 June 1597, in order to study at some German universities. He rejoined Tycho at Prague in January 1600, and having completed the Tychonic lunar theory, turned homeward again in August. He visited Frauenburg, where Copernicus had made his observations, took a master's degree at Rostock, and at Copenhagen found a patron in Christian Friis, chancellor of Denmark, who employed him in his household. Appointed in 1603 rector of the school of Viborg, he was elected two years later to a professorship in the University of Copenhagen, and his promotion to the chair of mathematics ensued in 1607. This post was held by Longomontanus till his death in 1647. The "" Cyclometria "" consitutes one of Longomontanus' earliest publications and is consequently referred to as one of his major works, together with the ""Astronomia Danica"". It is of the utmost scarcity, as not many copies have survived. DSB: XII:332" Thesaurus: 537 Bibl. Dan.: II:37. ‎

F.*3 with a very neatly closed tear (16), 159, (1)"" 342 + (8), 44 pp. Woodcut title-vignette, woodcut initials, and numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text as well as many tables.‎

‎Exceedingly scarce first edition of this milestone of astronomy, in which Tycho Brahe's geoheliocentric model is developed empirically and publicly for the first time, to common acceptance for posterity. Longomontanus' magnum opus presented for the very first time Brahe's planetary observations and put them into a systematic whole, presenting the results of the entire program of Brahe. Printed five years before Keplers' ""Tabulae Rudolphinae"", ""Astronomia Danica"" constitutes the first work to systemtize Brahe's observations. It will forever stand as a cornerstone of astronomical literature, presenting us with the Tychonic world system. ""When Tycho died in 1601, his program for the restoration of astronomy was unfinished. Even after the appearance of Kepler's ""Tabulae Rudolphinae"" (1627), a rival work that bore the imprimatur of Tycho, Severin's ""Astronomia Danica"" retained sufficient prestige to warrant reprinting in 1640 and 1663."" (DSB) - In fact, a title-issue of the work appeared already in 1633. For the dissemination of the Tychonic world system, Longomontanus' ""Astronomia Danica"" was in many ways more important and more influential than both Brahe's own original works and Kepler's ""Tabulae Rudolphinae"". And not only in the Western world - during the 20th century, research has shown for instance that this work was also a major source for the astronomical reform of China.‎
