‎First appearence of this milestone paper, announcing the very first determination of the movement and velocity of a star. (Sirius). This discovery of the motion in the line of sight, the radial velocity, is of exceeding importence in astronomy, for it can be determined by shifts in the position of the spectral lines, without regard tothe distance of the star.In this paper Huggins applied to spectroscopic astronomy the principle enunciated by Doppler in 1841 that the positions of spectrum lines change as the object moves to or from the spectator. De Humboldt intégrant ses observations géographiques, géologiques et météorologiques recueillies lors de ses voyages, et étudiant la place de l'homme dans la nature pour proposer une étude fondatrice de la géographie moderne.Né à Berlin (1769 - 1859), Alexandre de Humboldt fut très tôt passionné par les sciences naturelles et la minéralogie ; curieux de tout, il se livre à des expériences sur l'électricité et sur la météorologie. Il s'installe à Paris en 1797 puis il entreprend un voyage d'exploration en Amérique du Sud avec le botaniste français Bonpland, notamment en Amazonie puis à Cuba, au Pérou et dans les Andes, au Mexique et enfin aux Etats-Unis ; après cinq années (1799 - 1804) passées à amasser des matériaux de toutes sortes et dans de nombreux domaines (botanique, zoologie, climatologie, géographie, cartographie, géologie, etc.), ils regagnent Paris, qui est alors une grande capitale scientifique. Humboldt est alors considéré comme une encyclopédie vivante et fréquente Berthollet, Laplace, Gay-Lussac, etc. En 1826, il est obligé de rentrer en Prusse ou il ne se plait pas beaucoup et entreprend, dès 1827, un voyage d''exploration dans l'Oural et en Sibérie. Couvrure et coins frottés, rousseurs. État très correct. Quatrième édition chez le même éditeur de cet ouvrage capital d’un des plus grands savants et voyageurs. Magistrale synthèse traduite de l’allemand par Charles Galuski et Hervé Faÿe. Première édition allemande en 1845. L’ouvrage comprend une description du ciel et de la terre, un essai sur le développement de l’univers et de nombreuses explications des phénomènes célestes et terrestres, formant un véritable panorama du monde. Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859) est un naturaliste, géographe et explorateur allemand. Il était membre associé de l’Académie des sciences française et président de la Société de géographie de Paris. Par la qualité des relevés topographiques et des prélèvements de faune et de flore effectués lors de ses expéditions en Amérique Centrale et du Sud, puis en Sibérie, il a fondé les bases des explorations scientifiques. Clearly Huygens considered this degree to be adequate in the case of his explanations of light and gravity. It is difficult for the historian to assert how Huygens considered his theories about life on other planets and about the existence of beings comparable to man. The theories were expounded in his KOSMOSTHEOROS (1698). The argument of the book is very methodically set forth and its earnestness suggests that Huygens did indeed assign a very high degree of probability to these conjectures. In the Copernican world system the earth holds no privileged position among the other planets. It would therefore be unreasonable to suppose that life should be restricted to the earth alone. There must be life on the other planets and living beings endowed with reason who can contemplate the richness of the creation, since in their absence this creation would be senseless and the earth, again, would have an unreasonably privileged position... In the second part of Kosmostheoros Huygens discussed the different movements of the heavenly bodies and how they must appear to the inhabitants of the planets.
