Il hivernera en Antarctique à l'ouest de la terre de Graham, laissera son nom à une île, reviendra en Europe, puis fera de nombreuses expéditions en Arctique jusqu'en septembre 1935 où son légendaire "Pourquoi pas?" se perdra corps et biens.
