Hedendaagse blik op barokke meesterwerken Hoe gebruikten jezu eten de barokke beeldtaal van hun tijd om het publiek mee te trekken in hun visie op mens, geloof en maatschappij? In dit boek trachten verschillende auteurs deze complexe vraag te beantwoorden. De setting is Antwerpen in de zeventiende eeuw. De stad functioneerde toen als hoofdkwartier van de jezu etenorde in de Nederlanden en als bastion tegen het calvinisme in de Noord- Nederlandse Republiek. De kunsten beleefden er een ongeziene bloei. Schilders zoals Peter Paul Rubens en Anthony van Dyck realiseerden werken in opdracht van de jezu eten en namen deel aan het door de orde georganiseerde katholieke verenigingsleven, samen met grote groepen andere gelovigen. Zo gaat in deze publicatie veel aandacht naar de barokke Sint-Ignatiuskerk, de huidige Sint-Carolus Borromeuskerk aan het Hendrik Conscienceplein, waarvoor Rubens virtuoze plafondschilderingen realiseerde. De auteurs tonen verder aan hoe ook meer bescheiden genres, waaronder religieuze volksprenten, ge llustreerde heiligenlevens, school-, emblemata- en gebedenboeken werden aangewend om zoveel mogelijk gelovigen te enthousiasmeren, zowel in eigen land als in verre overzeese gebieden.

In what ways did the Jesuits deploy the Baroque visual language of the time to persuade the public of their vision on humankind, religion and society? In this beautifully illustrated book, which includes numerous artworks by Peter Paul Rubens and others, diverse authors rise to the challenge of finding answers to this complex question. The setting is Antwerp in the 17th century. At that time, the city was the Jesuit Order?s headquarters in the Netherlands and a bastion against the Calvinism in the Northern Netherlands Republic. The fine arts were flourishing there like never before. Painters such as Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck produced works for the Jesuits and participated in the Catholic community life organised by the order, with large groups of fellow believers. This publication takes a close look at the Baroque Saint Ignatius Church, now the Saint Charles Borromeo Church on Hendrik Conscienceplein, for which Rubens created magnificent ceiling paintings. The authors also show how more modest forms of art, such as religious folk prints, illustrated lives of the saints, schoolbooks, emblemata books and prayer books, were used to kindle the enthusiasm of as many believers as possible, both in their own country and in distant overseas territories. Baroque Influencers ? Jesuits, Rubens and the Arts of Persuasion presents written contributions from researchers affiliated with the Universities of Antwerp, Louvain and Stuttgart and various heritage institutes. Publication accompanying the triptych of exhibitions of the same name in the Saint Charles Borromeo Church, the museum Snijders&Rockox House and the Hendrik Conscience Heritage Library in Antwerp from 22 April until 16 July 2023. The exhibition is part of the Baroque Influencers city festival.

During the sixteenth century Antwerp was at the forefront of the Renaissance north of the Alps. Not only a new architectural style flourished in the Antwerp metropolis, but at the end of the sixteenth century sciences such as mathematics, optics, geometry and perspective became more and more important. They helped to redefine architecture and the other fine arts on a more scientific base. Their introduction in the arts at the beginning of the seventeenth century lead to new experiences, applications and even innovations in architecture. The Jesuit Order played a very crucial rule in this process. The realization of their new church in the centre of the city of Antwerp became one of the first attempts to bring together the applications of all those new ideas in one total project. Paintings by Peter Paul Rubens and sculptures by Hieronymus Duquenoy, Artus Quellinus etc. were participating in one of the first Early Baroque architectural realizations in the Low Countries. The Jesuit Church of Antwerp, actually the St Carolus Borromeus Church, was designed by Francois d'Aguilon, a scientist and architect of the Jesuit Order. His publication Opticorum Libri sex on optics and on the reflection of light was edited by the Officina Plantiniana in 1613, the same year he started his project for the church. This scientific and theoretical work helps us to understand the new experiences with light and space he experimented with. It is the aim of this publication to bring together researchers to confront the results of their studies about the interpretation of the facade of this Counter-Reformation church, the phenomenon of diffuse light created by reflection and refraction on marble statues, pillars and multiple ornaments, the combination of linear and parallel perspective applications, the sacral and social use of space, the signification of the facade and towers as parts of a perspective scene in the city landscape and the relationship of Rubens's paintings with the Baroque interior.
