‎Le Réformé normand Pierre-Antoine Motteux (1663-1718) partit se réfugier en Angleterre chez son parent et parrain Paul Dominique Motteux après la révocation de l’Edit de Nantes. Il s’appliqua à l’étude des langues et se familiarisa si bien avec la langue de sa nouvelle patrie, qu’après six ans seulement, il était éditeur du Gentleman’s Journal. Comme d'autres huguenots, il a écrit l'une des pages les mieux remplies de l'histoire de la presse écrite, en pleine révolution financière britannique. Il fut aussi dramaturge et traducteur. ‎

‎Erste deutsche Ausgabe. - Einer der wenigen von einer Frau geschriebenen Berichte über die Französische Revolution. Helen Maria Williams stammte aus London und wurde (vermutlich) 1761 geboren. Um 1780 lernte sie den Dichter Andrew Kippis kennen, der sie mit den führenden Intellektuellen der Zeit bekannt machte. Durch die Hilfe Kippis konnte Helen 1782 ihr erstes Gedicht, die Romanze Edwin and Eltruda, A Legendary Tale veröffentlichen. Gegen Ende der 80er Jahre engagierte sie sich in der Sklavenfrage und wurde politisch aktiv. Als begeisterte Anhängerin der Französischen Revolution schrieb sie 1790 die vorliegenden "Letters Written in France in the Summer of 1790". Sie beschreibt darin u. a. die Jahresfeierlichkeiten anlässlich der Erstürmung der Bastille. Auf Seite 40 findet sich ein bemerkenwerter Abschnitt über die Rolle der Frau in der Revolution: "Unstreitig haben die Weiber einen grossen Antheil an der französischen Revolution; denn was sich auch die gebietherischen Herren der Schöfung einbilden mögen, so haben wir dennoch auch bei den wichtigsten Ereignissen der Welt gewissen Einfluss, und wir wirken in die meschlichen Begebenheiten wie die geheimen Triebfedern des Mechanismus, die zwar nicht sichtbar, dennoch alle Bewegungen dirigiren". Von 1791/92 an lebte sie ausschließlich auf französischem Boden. Viele ihrer englischen Freunde wandten sich von Helen Maria ab, nicht zuletzt, da sie die "wilde Anarchie" in Frankreich mittrug. Auch der anonyme deutsche Übersetzer der Briefe, versucht mit Fussnoten und einer Nachschrift am Ende des 2. Teiles die revolutionäre Begeisterung der Autorin zu bremsen, lobt aber die Genauigkeit und die Unmittelbarkeit ihrer Beschreibung. Sie selbst wurde 1793 von Robespierre für mehrere Monate inhaftiert. - Titel mit gelöschtem Bibliotheksstempel. Durchgehend mässig gebräunt und stockfleckig. - Selten. Viele ihrer englischen Freunde wandten sich von Helen Maria ab, nicht zuletzt, da sie die "wilde Anarchie" in Frankreich mittrug (so urteilte Boswell, der sie in seinem Life of Johnson erwähnt). Williams veröffentlichte weitere Prosawerke, später ihre Poems on Various Subjects (1823). Sie lebte einige Jahre in Amsterdam und verstarb 1827 in Paris.‎
