Au tournant du siècle, alors que la Révolution russe s'apprête à éclater, deux courants s'affrontent au sein du socialisme en Allemagne, là précisément où Marx avait prédit la révolution prolétarienne. Le premier courant, dit "réformiste", est incarné par Eduard Bernstein ; le second, "orthodoxe", est représenté par Rosa Luxemburg et les spartakistes. A l' "opportunisme" bernsteinien qui prône une adhésion au pouvoir établi, Rosa Luxemburg répond par l'intransigeance des idéaux marxistes auxquels l'apogée du mouvement révolutionnaire russe en 1905 semble pour un temps donner raison.
