Ces importants mémoires, publiés sur les manuscrits de l’auteur par le père Jean-Baptiste Labat, contiennent la relation des voyages de Laurent d’Arvieux , commerçant et diplomate français . Laurent d’Arvieux (1635-1702) passa douze années dans le Levant et devint de ce fait un fin connaisseur des moeurs et coutumes orientales, il est à Constantinople pour seconder le marquis de Nointel dans sa négociation pour le renouvellement des capitulations par le Sultan et devient consul à Alger puis à Alep . Cette expérience lui permit de collaborer avec Molière et Lully à l’élaboration du Bourgeois gentilhomme qui, selon le souhait de Louis XIV, devait contenir des turqueries. Paris, Charles J.-B.
