‎ÉDITION ORIGINALE de cet ouvrage plusieurs fois réédité, rédigé comme un journal sous la forme de 58 LETTRES. Il contient trois frontispices gravés, dont l’un dépliant représentant une vue lithographiée du Mont Sinaï, et deux cartes dépliantes de la Syrie et de l'Égypte en 1835. Exemplaire de Jean-Gaston de PINS (1766-1850, prélat catholique français comportant sur le premier feuillet blanc un ENVOI AUTOGRAPHE à l'encre noire : «A Monseigneur / L'Archevêque d'Amasie / Administrateur du Diocèse / de Lyon / Hommage de L'auteur » et contenant une LETTRE AUTOGRAPHE signée de l'auteur adressée probablement au même (2 pages sur un grand feuillet double) et datée «Lyon, le 2 février 1826 ». Le baron Ferdinand de GÉRAMB (1772-1848), devenu le "Père Marie Joseph" en 1817, est un aventurier autrichien mais aussi un écrivain français et un des restaurateurs en France de l'Ordre cistercien de la stricte observance (ordre des Trappistes). Avant d'entrer dans les ordres il se maria, eut six enfants, mena une vie de soldat mouvementée, fut un agent actif de lutte contre la Révolution française et atteignit le rang de lieutenant-général dans l'armée autrichienne. Ayant levé un corps franc croate, il combattit à Wagram et fut un temps au service du tsar. Il remplit ensuite des missions en Sicile, Espagne et en Angleterre, toujours contre la France impériale et multipliant également des aventures parfois controversées. Son "Pélerinage", voyage au Levant rédigé sous forme de lettres, décrit son périple à travers l'Égypte, la Palestine, la Syrie et le Liban, durant lequel il visite Jérusalem, Bethléem, Jaffa, Nazareth, etc. Son récit fourmille d'anecdotes et de renseignements sur la vie quotidienne des natifs. ‎Summary Perhaps no other Palestine / Holy Land explorer has received as much attention as Edward Robinson, the American philologist, theologian, and historical geographer responsible for laying the foundations for the modern historic-geographical study of the Holy Land. Surprisingly, to date, almost no one has delved into Robinson's archive to illuminate his Holy Land expeditions, the writing of his monumental Biblical Researches, and the compilation of his fine maps. Similarly, no one has conducted a detailed study of the archive of Eli Smith, American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions Beirut missionary and Robinson's travel companion, for the same purposes. Fluent in Arabic and highly familiar with the region and its inhabitants, Smith's contribution to the expedition and to the Biblical Researches was considerable as his archive reveals. Investigating documents in both Robinson's and Smith's archives, the author of the present book became quickly convinced that much of the accepted narrative concerning Robinson's Holy Land studies should be re-evaluated and, consequently, rewritten. Several issues, for lack of relevant sources, have not yet been addressed by scholars. The story of Robinson and Smith's expedition and writing of the Biblical Researches that emerges from their extensive correspondence underscores the difficulties they overcame, and the accuracy and magnitude of their scholarship in an age bereft of modern technology.
