‎Alors que les questions de rhetorique et de poetique viennent generalement en fin d'etude quand il s'agit d'analyser des oeuvres religieuses, de propos delibere l'auteur du present travail est parti de l'art poetique, car les sequences d'Adam de Saint-Victor sont au moins autant des poemes que de chants liturgiques. Il s'agissait d'asseoir la lecture du texte non seulement sur l'analyse de son contenu, mais aussi sur un examen des procedes artistiques ; or, la rhetorique victorine n'est jamais gratuite ; elle est toujours motivee par une volonte de faire dire au mot, au vers, a la musicalite, ce que les concepts ont peine a exprimer. Le langage poetique, apparente au langage mystique, permet sinon une pleine comprehension, a tout le moins une perception intuitive du mystere, voire une adhesion. Ainsi la fonction psychagogique de la sequence ne tient pas seulement a son statut liturgique, mais aussi a la force intrinseque et au pouvoir du langage mis en oeuvre. Cette recherche, par une relecture extensive de l'oeuvre a travers la traduction et le commentaire, reprend dans le detail l'application des traits generaux d'abord degages, et s'efforce egalement de mettre au jour le contexte et les sources d'inspiration indispensables a la comprehension de textes devenus generalement etrangers a l'horizon culturel de la plupart des lecteurs actuels. L'authenticite des sequences comme la personnalite du poete, aussi illustre qu'il est peu connu, demeurent problematiques : en abordant cette question du point de vue de l'analyse interne, sans pretendre donner des reponses definitives, l'auteur espere convaincre que la beaute et l'excellence de la plupart de ces sequences temoignent de la presence, a leur origine, d'un homme a la fois poete, exegete, mystique, et profondement soucieux de faire partager sa foi. ‎Focusing on the critical case of Catherine of Siena (d. 1380), the essays in this volume consider the role of texts, translations and images in various media in constructing and disseminating the cult of a saint in the late Middle Ages. How does one construct a saint and promote a cult beyond the immediate community in which he or she lived? Italian mendicants had accumulated a good deal of experience in dealing with this politically explosive question. The posthumous description of the life of Francis of Assisi (d. 1226) written by the Master General of the order, Bonaventure (d. 1274), could be regarded as paradigmatic in this regard. A similarly massive intervention in the production and diffusion of a cult can be observed in the case of the Dominican tertiary, Catherine of Siena (d. 1380), who in many respects (e.g. the imitation of Christ and her stigmatization) ?competed? with Francis of Assisi. Raymund of Capua (d. 1399), the Master General of the order, established the foundation for the dissemination of the cult by writing the authoritative life, but it was only the following generation that succeeded in establishing and disseminating the cult on a broad basis by means of copies, adaptations, and translations. The question of how to make a cult, which stands at the center of this volume, thus presents itself in terms of the challenge of rewriting a legend for different audiences. The various contributions consider the role, not only of texts in many different vernaculars (Czech, English, French, German, and Italian), but also of images, whether separately or in connection with one another. ‎In the year 721 the Anglo-Saxon missionary St Boniface came with his followers to Hessia, a small but turbulent province on the borders of the expanding Frankish kingdom. This book is the first dedicated interdisciplinary study of Boniface?s thirty-three-year mission among the Hessians. The author relates the historical sources to the rich archaeological heritage of the region in order to describe the political and cultural context of the mission and its relationship to long-term Frankish interests in the Saxon borderlands. Thanks to the survival of many letters between the missionary community and its supporters, it is also possible to examine a symbolic literary discourse that portrayed the missionaries as heroic exiles who chose to suffer torments in a distant land for the sake of Christ. Finally, fresh evidence drawn from topography and place names is used to argue for the existence of an expansive pre-Christian sacred landscape that was one of the major obstacles faced by Boniface and his followers.
