Summary 'Latin in Byzantium' explores the linguistic competence, cultural identity, and transmission of Latin texts in the 'noua Roma' between the fourth and the ninth centuries. Drawing together texts from a number of fields (e.g., law, grammar, religion, and tactics) and across a range of different forms (e.g., palaeographic, epigraphic, and papyrological), this important project provides scholars for the first time with an in-depth knowledge of both the Latin-speaking milieux in Byzantium, and of the contexts in which Latin was used. Crucially, the ancient sources studied in this volume are also analysed in their broader political and sociological context, providing rich material for study across different disciplines and making this volume an important resource for closing the gaps between literary and non-literary texts, history, and philology. Summary The King of Cyprus, Peter I of Lusignan (1359-1369), was one of the most fascinating figures in the history of the Latin East and the later crusades. He was involved in European power politics, his crusading activities brought him into conflict with the Turkish beyliks of Anatolia and the Mamluk sultanate of Egypt, and his rule was closely linked with broader developments in the Eastern Mediterranean, such as the decay of Byzantium, the East-West schism, and the beginning of the Ottoman expansion in the Balkans. His adventurous life constitutes a captivating case study of court life, feudal and chivalric ethos, and political culture in the fourteenth century. This volume investigates developments in the Eastern Mediterranean before and during the reign of Peter I from a comparative perspective. It consists of five parts, which treat the political, diplomatic, and ecological context of the crusading movement in the time between the fall of Acre (1291) and the sack of Alexandria (1365), Peter I's crusading policy and the Alexandrian crusade, Cypriot society and court life in the time of Peter I, the situation in Muslim-Turkish Anatolia, the second target of King Peter's crusading policy, and, finally, Byzantium, its encounter with the Turks, the schism of the Churches, and theological trends in the time of the Hesychast Controversy. Jahrhunderts, kritisch herausgegeben.

Summary This volume gathers the papers presented during an interdisciplinary research seminar entitled "The individual and his body in the Ancient Mediterranean Basin." This seminar was at the crossroads of history of religions and social anthropology, creating a dialogue between philologists, archaeologists, historians of religions and anthropologists. Its main aim consisted in studying self-perceptions of the body in the Ancient Near East, with incursions in other parts of the Mediterranean Basin in a comparatist perspective. In this volume, various themes are examined, such as: 1) the relationship between the body and language; 2) the body, perceptions and society, including a study of the senses as they are described in the texts; 3) the body as a symbol of social belonging; 4) the body as a medium for religious experience. Summary This volume collects essays from an international group of scholars who treat various aspects of the Fourth Lateran Council's placement within the development of the ius commune. Topics include the canon law about armsbearing clergy, episcopal elections, heresy, degrees of affinity within marriage, the oversight of relic veneration; two essays highlight the council's reaction to the Fourth Crusade's sack of Constantinople in trying to incorporate the eastern church into the ecclesiastical structure and liturgical norms of the Roman Church; several essays concentrate on the usage of Roman or civil law in some of Lateran IV's constitutions and emphasize issues of private and procedural law. Collectively, and headed by an essay by Anne J. Duggan on the relationship of Pope Alexander III's pontificate to the Lateran IV constitutions, the essays create a fuller picture of Innocent III and his curia's reliance on developments within the jurisprudence of the preceding half century, but they also reveal the ways in which they forged new paths and made significant contributions to guide canon law in the years following the council. Summary The Early Bronze Age site of Jebel al-Mutawwaq, located on a hill overlooking the Zarqa River in Jordan, was a thriving centre of population from the second half of the fourth millennium into the third millennium BCE. During this time, the settlement developed both in population and social complexity, undergoing the beginnings of an urbanization process that fundamentally changed the relationship between this community of the Transjordanian Highlands with the surrounding landscape, until it was completely abandoned around 2900 BCE. This volume offers a new assessment of the site by combining data from the first surveys of the site, under a Spanish team led by J. A. Fernandez-Tresguerres, with the new results from six seasons of excavations led by teams from Perugia in Italy, and San Esteban in Spain. In doing so, this work sheds new light on this walled settlement and its huge megalithic necropolises, and offers a fresh understanding of the site. Summary This volume investigates settlement trajectories and systems of movement in the Birecik-Carchemish sector of the Euphrates River Valley from the fifth to the third millennium BCE. Integrating remote sensing analyses, published data of individual surveys and excavations, and the original results of the ?Land of Carchemish Project', this multi-scalar study shows the significant longevity of settlement choices and the role of small sites in shaping the cultural landscape of the region, both along the Euphrates and in the uplands. Attention is paid to the dynamics behind settlement creation and continuity, while the author also provides a reassessment of the radiocarbon dates from sites in the area of study. Summary This monograph is the first study to highlight the plasticity of the figure of Pilate across Christian literature of the first millennium, as transmitted in Greek, Latin, Coptic, Syriac, Ge'ez, Armenian, Georgian, Slavic and Arabic. The name of the person Pilate is present in the memoirs and in the confessions of faith for the role of this Roman praefectus of Judea in the central event of Christianity which is the death sentence of Jesus of Nazareth. However, we only know his character as it was constructed by the authors of the first century - the Jewish writers, the authors of the Gospels which have become canonical or of the texts called apocrypha. It is from these sources that the authors of the patristic period elaborate figures of Pilate based on their analysis of his role in the Passion. Like the emperor depicted in the apocryphal texts, they in turn put Pilate on trial: how could the human judge judge the Judge of the universe? Who is responsible for the death of Jesus? Even though it is very largely sullied in the medieval West, the triune figure of Pilate as governor, judge and Roman is enriched with the features of the informant, of the evangelizer of the emperor, and even of the martyr and the saint. Summary Bishops have always played a central role in the making and enforcement of the law of the Church, and none more so than the bishop of Rome. From convening and presiding over church councils to applying canon law in church courts, popes and bishops have exercised a decisive influence on the history of that law. This book, a selection of Anne J. Duggan's most significant studies on the history of canon law, highlights the interactive role of popes and bishops, and other prelates, in the development of ecclesiastical law and practice between 1120 and 1234. This emphasis directly challenges the pervasive influence of the concept of 'papal monarchy', in which popes, and not diocesan bishops and their legal advisers, have been seen as the driving force behind the legal transformation of the Latin Church in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Contrary to the argument that the emergence of the papacy as the primary judicial and legislative authority in the Latin Church was the result of a deliberate programme of papal aggrandizement, the principal argument of this book is that the processes of consultation and appeal reveal a different picture: not of a relentless papal machine but of a constant dialogue between diocesan bishops and the papal Curia, in which the 'papal machine' evolved to meet the demand. TABLE OF CONTENTS Avant-propos Introduction. Summary The Liber de ordine creaturarum is an anonymous Latin work with an Irish provenance that dates back to the seventh century. It presents the creation as the divine handiwork and is notable for serving as both a commentary on the Hexaemeron (Six-day Work) in Genesis and as one of the earliest works of systematic theology. Although previously attributed to Isidore of Seville, the Liber de ordine creaturarum is far more than a mere compilation of 'authorities.' Instead, it emphasizes the inherent order that exists within the creation itself.
