‎Voor de tentoonstelling Vrij belangrijke foto's hebben twee Hermans-kenners uit de bijna 15.000 foto's een selectie van tientallen foto's gemaakt, waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is getoond. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. In de tentoonstelling is een mix van vintages afdrukken en nieuwe prints te zien. De titel van de tentoonstelling verwijst naar Hermans' archief. In het mapje Vrij belangrijke foto's zat een bonte verzameling van 57 afdrukken: portretten van Hermans zelf, zijn ouders en andere familieleden, vrienden plus foto's van affiches, de Arc de Triomphe, huizen in Wenen en het geboortehuis van Nietzsche. *** Als afsluiting van het 'Hermansjaar' 2021-2022, waarin wordt gevierd dat de Nederlandse schrijver Willem Frederik Hermans honderd jaar geleden werd geboren, presenteert het Fotomuseum Den Haag een expositie ingericht met door hem gemaakte foto's. Gelijktijdig verschijnt Willem Frederik Hermans - Vrij belangrijke foto's met een verse selectie uit zijn fotografi sche oeuvre. Het boek en de tentoonstelling kwamen tot stand onder auspici n van het Willem Frederik Hermans Instituut en met in-stemming van de Erven Hermans. Het in principe gesloten archief-Hermans is daarvoor een malig opengesteld voor de gastconservatoren. In 1957, toen zijn roman De donkere kamer van Damokles niet wilde vlotten, heeft Hermans overwogen zich om te scholen tot fotograaf. Hij kocht een professionele camera, mat zich de firmanaam 'Persfotobedrijf W.F. Hermans' aan en ging in de leer bij Nico Jesse, van wie hij ook een oude Leica overnam. Daarmee sloeg hij fanatiek aan het fotograferen in Groningen, Amsterdam en Parijs. Uiteindelijk kreeg de Leica een sleutelrol in zijn roman. Piet Schreuders en Bram Oostveen bekeken alle 4.500 zwartwitfoto's en 9.829 kleurendia's in het archief-Hermans en maakten een selectie waarvan het merendeel niet eerder is gepubli ceerd. Sommige foto's zijn zelfs door Hermans nooit gezien, omdat ze zijn gereproduceerd van negatieven die hij zelf niet afdrukte. Met tekstbijdragen van Wim van Sinderen, conservator van het Fotomuseum Den Haag, Piet Schreuders en W.F. Hermans. In zijn inlei ding plaatst Wim van Sinderen W.F. Hermans in de traditie van de Nederlandse fotografie. Piet Schreuders geeft achtergrondinformatie over de gekozen foto's in het essay 'De verlegen fotograaf' en W.F. Hermans geeft een inkijk in zijn visie op fotografie. Bram Oostveen werkt bij het onderzoeksinstituut Huygens ING en was nauw betrokken bij de totstandkoming van de 24-delige Volledige Werken van Willem Frederik Hermans.‎
