"Les Hommes gris" fut remarqué par Valery Larbaud, qui participa à sa publication en France, et salué par Maurice Blanchot, James Joyce, Ramon Fernandez et Jean Paulhan comme le premier exemple de monologue intérieur. Les nouvelles ici rassemblées sont construites selon le même modèle du monologue intérieur et présentées par Eugène Bestaux comme un "défi" littéraire.
