‎Paul Klee (1879-1940) was een uitzonderlijk schilder, tekenaar, graficus, leraar en theoreticus die een beslissende invloed heeft gehad op de ontwikkeling van de kunst in de vorige eeuw. Vooral in zijn grafisch werk is goed te zien hoe zich van de traditie losmaakte en een van de grote vernieuwers van de moderne kunst werd. Deze portfolio werd voor het eerst in 1945 gepubliceerd door de uitgever & kunsthandelaar Curt Valentin en werd vervolgens, twee jaar later, heruitgegeven door het MoMa (New York). De publicatie bestond uit losse platen met facsimile afdrukken van veertig lithografieen en etsen van Paul Klee en was vergezeld van een brochure met een inleidende tekst van James Thrall Soby, Trustee van het MoMa en voormalig afdelingshoofd van het departement Sculptuur en Beeldhouwkunst. In 1947 maakten reeds dertig van de veertig gepubliceerde prenten deel uit van de grafische collectie van het museum. Oplage: 500 exemplaren originele prijs; 220.00 euro Paul Klee (1879-1940) was an exceptional painter, draftsman, printmaker, teacher and theorist who has had a decisive influence on the development of art in the last century. Especially in his graphic work is good to see how loosened itself from tradition and became one of the great innovators of modern art. This portfolio was first published in 1945 by the publisher and art dealer Curt Valentin and then, two years later, reissued by the MoMA (New York). The publication consisted of loose sheets with facsimile printing forty lithographs and etchings by Paul Klee and was accompanied by a booklet with an introduction by James Thrall Soby, Trustee of the MoMa and former head of the Department of Sculpture and Sculpture. In 1947 were already thirty of the forty published prints part of the graphic collection of the museum. For this new reissue (the third) are all forty works by Paul Klee re-photographed and digitized - eight are in color. These are the questions which underlie the contributions to the volume The Quintessence of Lives: Intellectual Biographies in the Low Countries presented to Jan Roegiers. More than twenty-five historians have written intellectual biographies of figures who created a ?second life? for themselves on paper. All persons discussed are firmly rooted in the intellectual life of the Low Countries and were active there between the sixteenth and the twentieth century. The volume is offered on the occasion of the retirement of Prof. Dr. Jan Roegiers as full professor at the K.U.Leuven. As head librarian and archivist, also in charge of the university?s art collections, Jan Roegiers played a pivotal role in collecting, preserving and making available the documentary and artistic inheritance of the University of Leuven. His main interest is in the intellectual and ecclesiastical history of the Low Countries in the Modern period, but his curiosity also made him venture far beyond the boundaries of the research group in which he was active as professor ordinarius. Whatever the topic, all his texts show how much he valued the craftmanship of historiography, his great consideration for the wider context which codetermines the acts and writings of committed intellectuals, and his relish for erudition. These same features are variously reflected in the biographical contributions in this volume. ‎The fourth volume examines all the works attributed to masters with provisional names from the 1470s to the first half of the 16th century (Master of the Joseph Sequence, Master of the Magdalen Legend, Master of the Orsoy Altarpiece, Master of the Saint Barbara Legend, Master of the Saint Catherine Legend, Master of the Saint Lucy Legend, Master of the Saint Ursula Legend, Master of the View of Saint-Gudule, Master of 1473). It was towards 1900 that anonymous works were first grouped, on the basis of stylistic affinities, around certain paintings presenting particular characteristics. Each group is attributed to an anonymous master named after the painting (the eponymous work) which forms the basis for this group. These ensembles serve to give direction to the work of art historians, in the hope of identifying these anonymous painters at a later date. Some of these groups, to which new works have been added over past decades, appear fairly heterogeneous, and merit critical reexamination in the light of modern analysis methods. Like the three previous volumes, it is published in English and abundantly illustrated with colour photographs of the investigated paintings, detail photographs and comparative material. Each of the nineteen paintings has been submitted to exhaustive and detailed examination following a scientific research method which has been fully established over the years. This includes, on the one hand, examination of the supports and the original frames, dendrochronological analysis, infrared reflectography, stereomicroscopic observation, radiographic analysis, ultraviolet fluorescence imaging and, where possible, examination of paint samples and, on the other hand, historical, iconographic and stylistic analysis, dating, attribution and bibliography. Information is drawn from documents in the museum?s archives and supplemented with material held at the Royal Institute for the Study and Conservation of Belgium?s Artistic Heritage (IRPA/KIK) and the Centre for the Study of Fifteenth-Century Painting in the Southern Netherlands and the Principality of Liege. Each group of paintings attributed to a master with a provisional name is introduced with a short status quaestionis evoking the origins of the grouping and the principal publications relating to it. ‎First edition of Peano's third version - the third volume - of his Formulario-project aiming at presenting all mathematical axioms and results in a clear form always using his five axioms and thereby rewrites all known mathematics in a symbolic form and thus provide a key to a satisfactory solution to the questions of the foundations of mathematics. The logical notations used by Peano were used and developed by Whitehead and Russell in their ""Principia Mathematica"" of 1910.""In 1892 he announced in the Rivista the Formulario project, which was to take much of his mathematical and editorial energies for the next sixteen years. He hoped that the result of this project would be the publication of a collection of all known theorems in the various branches of mathematics. The notations of his mathematical logic were to be used, and proofs of the theorems were to be given. There were five editions of the Formulario (the offered item being the third). The first appeared in 1895"" the last was completed in 1908, and contained some 4,200 theorems (the item offered). But Peano was less interested in logic as a science per se than in logic as used in mathematics. (For this reason he called his system ""mathematical logic."") Thus the last two editions of the Formulario introduce sections on logic only as it is needed in the proofs of mathematical theorems."" (DSB).The famous Italian mathematician, logical philosopher, pioneer of symbolic logic, and a founder of mathematical logic and set theory, Giuseppe Peano (1858 -1932) studied mathematics at the University of Turin, where he was employed just after graduating (1880), and where he stayed almost all of his life, devoting this to mathematics. After having graduated with honours, he was employed to assist first Enrico D'Ovidio, and then the renowned Angelo Genocchi, who possessed the chair of Infinitesimal calculus. In 1890 Peano became extraordinary professor, and in 1895 ordinary professor, of infinitesimal calculus at the Unversity of Turin.‎

""Pearson did not pursue the theory of multiple and partial correlation beyond the point to which he had carried it in his basic memoir on correlation (1896). The general theory of multiple and partial correlation and regression was developed by his mathematical assistant, G. Udny Yule, in two papers published in 1897.
